Editorial reviews

Editors Select, January 2013 - With a title like that how can you not be intrigued? Already an international bestseller, Neuhaus's US debut has garnered plenty of pre-release buzz for taking well-worn mystery staples (cold case, small town, unfriendly populace) and artfully weaving them together into something altogether fresh, with a story that keeps readers on their toes till the end. Publisher's summary

On a rainy November day, police detectives Pia Kirchhoff and Oliver von Bodenstein are summoned to a mysterious traffic accident: a woman has fallen from a pedestrian bridge onto a car driving underneath. According to a witness, the woman may have been pushed. The investigation leads Pia and Oliver to a small village, and the home of the victim, Rita Cramer.

On a September evening eleven years earlier, two seventeen-year-old girls vanished from the village without a trace. In a trial based only on circumstantial evidence, twenty-year-old Tobias Sartorius, Rita Cramer's son, was sentenced to ten years in prison. Bodenstein and Kirchhoff discover that Tobias, after serving his sentence, has now returned to his home town. Did the attack on his mother have something to do with his return? In the village, Pia and Oliver encounter a wall of silence. When another young girl disappears, the events of the past seem to be repeating themselves in a disastrous manner. The investigation turns into a race against time, because for the villagers it is soon clear who the perpetrator is - and this time they are determined to take matters into their own hands.

Solid Mystery

This is definitely not a home run type book but it is at least an entertaining run of the mill mystery novel.

There are definitely a few premises or plot lines that are a little ridiculous or as another reviewer put it too coincidental. I think if you can accept that and go on and enjoy the story, you will enjoy it.

It's not something that makes me want to go out and look for another book by this author, but if I see something that has good reviews I would give it a try.

The narrator does a good job, nothing spectacular, nothing aggravating.

Overall I would recommend the book. It's a solid story and worth the time and credit - just don't expect a big hit.

Loads of twists and turns...

...but I found that fun. A lot of reviewers have commented on the myriad twists and turns and how they found it unbelievable. I tend to find most mysteries slightly unbelievable, so I just decide if the author kept me guessing and gave me enough to entertain me. This one definitely did.

I disagree with the idea that you didn't have enough information to make a good guess as to who done it. You did, but it wasn't breezy by any means. I'm guessing the translation made it a little cluttered, but all in all it kept me at my desk editing photos, which is what I ask from my audible books.

A story as intriguing as its title.

Although you can't judge a book by its cover, you can occasionally choose one by its title. I simply couldn't pass this one up (kind of like choosing wine because of the label) and was quite pleased. A very well-crafted story. Enjoyable characters, a plot with intriguing twists, and all the red herrings are tied up by the end.

Snow White must be Heard

What a wonderful story. Well written, well told and it holds the reader in suspense to the last. Of course it has a happy ending, but could easily have a sequel. Highly recommended and I am happy I found a new author.

Very exciting!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

YES, I really enjoyed it, I loved the pace and characters. I wanted to keep listening every day but in this case I am sad my commute is not 15 hrs long :)

Who was your favorite character and why?

They all work together really well, I couldn't pick a favorite.

Any additional comments?

I did not enjoy how short the breaks were in between chapters or voices. It was hard to follow at times because it seemed like just another sentence pause but after a few moments I would realize we changed voices and tones. It was confusing throughout the book because of the reader. I enjoyed his voice and tone but really did not appreciate the too short pauses in between chapters.

Terrific mystery & study of German small town life

I absolutely loved this novel by Nele Neuhaus, which was as much a character study of the worst of small town life in Germany as it was a mystery story. Lots of engaging characters and interesting plot twists combined with good writing and atmospheric descriptions of the scenery and homes. I think it's not much of a spoiler to say that you know from the beginning that Tobias must have been framed, but listening to it all unravel kept me hooked to the very last minute of the highly satisfying conclusion. I grew up in Germany and can say that the scenes and descriptions are very authentic. The translation was well done and the narration was outstanding. Highly recommended!
