Publisher's summary

Anticipating problems, a prestigious global restaurant convention hires Leo as a security liaison. His assignment: monitor the movements of two adversarial steak-house competitors whose "beef" has previously made for some nasty confrontations and landed a food critic in the crossfire of two warring factions. Leo sends "the Boys" off to shadow all three parties and report back to him. But even the simplest of plans can cascade into catastrophe. And Leo soon finds himself served up as the prime suspect in a murder...realizing that both his life and career are at stake.

Fun witty and a bit dated

It’s funny and charming. Light and clever. Interstellar but never serious. Fords original characters are original as is the plot.

Love Leo

I enjoy this Waterman series very much. The characters are interesting and likable and the writing is very good, too. Altogether entertaining whether you’re reading or listening. I have to admit I don’t think Mr. Lawler is cast well. His voice is too high and even kind of scratchy. I don’t begrudge any actor work. I just wish he hadn’t got this specific job. Leo’s voice would be a kind of lazy baritone in my imagination.

Fun private detective mystery

Slow Burn is from author GM Ford's mid writing period approximately 20 years ago. I'm pleased that most of his Leo Waterman books are available in audio. In this novel Leo shares the protagonist role with "the boys", several old drunks who help him from time to time when he needs more eyes and ears. Selecting between 4 and 5 stars for this suspense thriller was difficult. Patrick Lawlor's narration is excellent.
