Publisher's Summary

When the decomposed body of a woman is found by railway tracks outside Bristol, all indications are that she's committed suicide. But DI Jack Caffery is not so sure. He is on the trail of someone predatory, someone who hides in the shadows. And for the first time in a very long time, he feels scared.

Police Diver Flea Marley is working alongside Caffery. Having come to terms with the loss of her parents, she's beginning to wonder whether their relationship could go beyond the professional. And then she finds something that changes everything.

Not only is it far too close to home - but it's so horrifying that she knows that nothing will ever be the same again...

    "Great story, terrible narration"

It's taken me two attempts to finish this book. It's a good story, well written, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you on your toes. I've never encountered any of Hayder's work before but will definitely be looking out for the other books.

BUT (and it is a big but) audiobooks are heavily reliant on good narration. I'm afraid this book is delivered in what I can only describe as an over acted sneer: all the characters sound as if they are starring in a 1930s pulp detective novel. It was bad enough to make me give up first time after only half an hour's listening. I eventually came back to it on a long drive with nothing else to listen to. The plot slowly overcame the deficiencies of the narration, but it never failed to irritate.

    "Skin (Unabridged)" by Mo Hayder"

My first Mo Hayder novel. Good story, clever plot(s), well written. I really did enjoy it, but I could only give three stars. Reason? The reader.
Several times I lost the my way, and had to listen again, because the reader was killing it for me.
I have just seen another Hayder Audiobook but am not buying as it is read by the same guy.

    "Great Sequel to Ritual"

After reading Ritual and enjoying it immensely, I couldn't wait to read the next book in the series. Thankfully, Skin did not disapoint: the story provided the same calibre of excellence found in Ritual, with an exciting and gritty plot. As with Ritual, the main characters are extremely likeable. I enjoyed the book from start to finish.

Unlike other reviewers, I really enjoyed Andrew Wincott's narration, I think his use of different voices for each character is very well done and can only serve to improve the enjoyment of the story. I suppose like anything else, it's simply a matter of personal preference.

"Good story, shame about the reading."

I found the style of the reader very irritating at times as the phrasing was often odd and his voice often rose at the end of a sentence. The dramatisation of the characters was better as the rhythm of the language was more predicatable. The reading of the text did detract from my enjoyment of the well-crafted plot.
