Publisher's Summary

On a sullen, cloudy July day ten years since 7/7, the happy, confident and optimistic British Prime Minister is visiting a charity in East London. It’s just two months after the general election which saw John Campbell's government returned to power with a clear majority, the economy is on the mend and the coalition is fast becoming a bad memory. Suddenly, a man appears out of the crowd and shoots him three times in the chest.

Step forward Alex Cartwright (Andrew Scott), MI5 Chief Counter Terrorism Officer who must find out the truth. But it’s easier said than done, as he discovers that whoever ordered the assassination has covered their tracks very well indeed. Along with Ellen Townsend, his trusted second-in-command, Cartwright finds himself embroiled in a race against time which leads him into the murky heart of Westminster...and beyond.

From the pen of renowned screenwriter and novelist M J Arlidge, featuring an established British cast and with an exclusively-composed musical score, Six Degrees of Assassination is truly a thriller not to be missed.

What the Critics Say

"Arlidge is a strong new voice in thriller crime fiction. Brave, fearless, and quite terrifying." (Judy Finnegan on Eeny Meeny, selected for the Richard and Judy Book Club)

"Good Original Drama Pity About the "Music""

Wonderful to see original contemporary drama being produced by/for audible. Excellent sharp political thriller with some fine actors. Only problem is the way over the top music used to emphasize the dramatic moments, too loud too obvious. I think if you are going to buy such audio you don't need this jarring background to underline the dramatic "bits". Good idea for original work but some more subtlety in production please.

"Great story, interesting but confusing performance"

This is a great story, with suspicion and twists. I don't understand the "6 degrees" part of the title; the "assassination" part is obvious.

It is a drama, not a "book." As others have said, it is like listening to a movie with the images turned off. That's the point. It is less like an embellished book and more like a diminished movie. In books, the author tells you who is speaking and what they are doing. In movies, you can see what they are doing, and usually you can tell who is who by their looks. In this you imagine what they are doing, which did work well to some degree, but the voices didn't work.

I could not tell the characters apart, and could not remember their roles. Their names didn't help as they were used infrequently. I kept swearing at it, "who the blank is that?" There is a whole list of performers, but I couldn't distinguish one from another. Honestly, I have heard better, more distinct voices from single readers than these. There were maybe 2 voices that sounded as if they were over 40, as I would expect the PM's wife, and the MPs to be, as well as the police. All the others sounded like 20-somethings trying to be tough. Like your top investigative agent is 23? I don't think so.

There are books where I couldn't remember who was who, and I find that bothersome like maybe there are too many characters, or they aren't fleshed enough.

Others have raved over this kind of drama; maybe it's just me.

    "Good story, Bad audio"

This was a great story ruined by a bad audio mix. The audio was mixed with the premise that the listener would either be wearing noise canceling headphones or in a quiet environment while listening to this story. In my case, I was in a semi running down an interstate. The sound level ranged from barely audible to a loud shout requiring regular sound level adjustments on my part. I would have scraped listening to the book altogether however the story caught my interest and held it throughout.... kudos to the author and actors for an otherwise excellent presentation.

I couldn't finish this dog. What gets me is all the great reviews this got for being so good. It's not written well, acted well, and has bad pacing. If this is an example of these audio plays that have been sold as being something special...Then count me out. I'd rather listen to one performer on one well written book than another one of these

    "All filler, no thrilller"

Very disappointed with this one. I bought this title because I'm a fan of BBC dramatisations and thought this would be of that quality; wrong!! Uneven casting: Andrew Scott and Julian Rhind-Tutt are very good actors and both do good jobs here, however Freema Agyeman is excruciatingly terrible. There is no characterisation for Ellen Townsend as Agyeman's delivery is so flat it's like a first-year acting student reading straight off the page for the first time. And don't even get me started on the actress playing another important role Tien Le. The scenes between her and Ellen are so bad I had to fast forward over them. Story: lame and tangental with so little true dramatic tension that the 'dramatic' music played between scenes was obviously called upon in post-production to try and inject some badly needed suspense, instead it conversely shows up just how lame and floppy the dialogue is by comparison.

"A thriller that left me on the edge of my seat..."
Where does Six Degrees of Assassination: An Audible Drama rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I'd say it was quite suspenseful and believeable. Compared to the thrillers I've listened to, Six Degrees begins with a typical thriller-esque beginning: the assassination of a beloved political leader. It is immediately assumed that terrorists are responsible ... but by the end of it, the criminal masterminds seem to have been based closer to home than one would have expected.

What other book might you compare Six Degrees of Assassination: An Audible Drama to, and why?

I'd compare it to Gone Girl--the twist in the end, although not unexpected, is well-timed and well-delivered.

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favourite?

I think Ellen and Sandra were brilliant and believable.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Terrorists aren't the only suspects...

    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed the insight into British politics!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely, as long as they enjoyed good quality radio drama.

    Any additional comments?

This is an interesting move by Audible - to all intents and purposes, it's a high quality radio drama (it even has cliffhanger episode endings, complete with swelling music). The story is labyrinthine, and the writer's worked hard to make it all hang together. It does, but I pretty much guarantee you won't guess the guilty party much before the end. The story, which cleverly mixes an investigation into the assassination of a Prime Minister with the battle to succeed him, works well, all the voice performers are excellent, and I really hope this is the beginning of a new series for Audible - hopefully, it'll show up on the radio at someone as well!

"Shame - could have been so much better"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. The plot line was not predictable, it was full of excitement and twists and the ending was a surprise. A good 'listen to'. Boring it wasn't.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The female deputy prime minister. Fascinating depiction of a woman fighting the establishment of male public school MPs, and it is quite a fight. Inspiring.

How could the performance have been better?

The cod accents were excruciating to listen to. Why were.they used? As actors were performing the roles, the Russian and East European parts could have been taken easily by 'native' speakers.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There were several moments that were truly surprising or made me jump. Literally. Some sections were quite shocking.

    Any additional comments?

There were far too many cringe worthy cliches and at times I wondered how the actors could have said them with a straight face. Great acting cast, because it gave me the giggles.

Would you consider the audio edition of Six Degrees of Assassination: An Audible Drama to be better than the print version?

There is no print version - this is written for audible as a drama and this is a great concept. I look forward to more.

Who was your favorite character and why?

All of the actors in this drama perform really well. It's the kind of standard you would expect from the BBC.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I enjoy a multi character drama as a change from a book narrated by only one actor. It brings more realism to the story.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The drama worked towards an exciting denouement. It built the tension all the way up to the end.

    Any additional comments?

I look forward to Audible commissioning more specially written dramas to add to its library of audio books.

A story of politicians in peril is probably not everybody's nightmare scenario. It is however delivered with great panache by a talented group of actors. The drama is cranked up by some over the top music and in some places it was so long I thought I might have clicked onto iTunes by mistake.
Overall this is the sort of Saturday afternoon drama you expect to hear on the radio. Engaging but not memorable.

What made the experience of listening to Six Degrees of Assassination: An Audible Drama the most enjoyable?

The actors and pace of the story
I normally get any twists but missed this one completely

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Several all brilliantly acted

Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favourite?

    Two things let this down
1 the loud long music in places. Not a book to fall asleep to
