When DI Vera Stanhope finds the body of a woman in the sauna room of her local gym, she wonders briefly if she’s uncovered a simple death from natural causes. But a closer inspection reveals ligature marks around the victim’s throat…Vera pulls her team together and sets them interviewing those connected to the victim, while she and colleague, Sergeant Joe Ashworth, work to find a motive. And when they discover that the victim had worked in social services, and had been involved in a shocking case involving a young child, then it appears obvious that the two are somehow connected. Though things are never as they seem…

I loved the fact that this book was read by a Geordie. It was perfect!
The story wasn't filled with car chases and gun shots or superfit tanned and toned hunks....It had really believable characters based around Tyneside.
The main detective is an overweight and lonely forty-something woman with her own troubles, past and present. But I liked her, even though she sounded like a real pain to have as a boss!!
Maybe there happened to be a few too many amazing coincidences for the plot to be believed..... but it held my attention all the way through.
"Oneof the best audiobooks I've heard"
Far too many audiobooks are spoiled by poor or inappropriate narration. This was really excellent. The story was totally absorbing and beautifully read - what a treat!
"Beautifully written and beautifully read"
This book set in my native Northumberland is a wonderful listen. The story is absorbing and poignant, dealing with the consequences of errors of judgement by ordinary people in difficult situations that continue to haunt them. Having just given up on another book because the geordie accent was unbearable I have to say this narration was first rate, one of the best I have heard
"VERA is very enjoyable"
I loved listening to this book. I loved it so much that as soon as I finished it I downloaded another Vera story and preordered the new book that comes out in May. The narrator was excellent and I kept visualising Brenda Blethyn who I now realise plays the part of Vera excellently and portrays the author's character to a T. A very good listen.
"Good listening overall"
I have only recently discovered Ann Cleeves, and have enjoyed this book. I found Inspector Stanhope to be a bit unbelievable as a character, it is unlikely that a slovenly overweight bully of a woman would reach such a level in her career, but despite this the story was good, well woven and kept me guessing. I liked the gentle Northumbrian accent of the narrator.
"I had no idea this was a tv show"
Downloaded it because it looked interesting, it was only later that I realized it was a tv show. Really can't see how TV can do justice to such a superb narrative, certainly won't be watching VERA on TV but will be searching out more books
"Fabulously easy to listen to"
Found the narration easy to listen to and quite soothing (must be that northern accent!)
The story line was interesting with enough detail to paint vivid images in the mind but not too overly complicated, making it the perfect bed time book!
Accent relevant to the setting of the book, making it more realistic. It was as if someone who had actually been there was retelling the story.
Much better than TV series.

Smile at the description of the country side and grin about the gym
"brilliant. gripping and wonderful listening"
One of the top 10
If you love the tv programme Vera, then turn the tv off and listen
Very well put together mystery and excellent reading by Charlie Hardwick (well done - you brought Vera to life). Will definitely buy another Ann Cleeves book now.
