Publisher's summary

For fans of Stephen King, Blake Crouch, and Michael Crichton comes a new, heart-pounding thriller by Brett Battles.

Daniel Ash wakes after midnight to the cry of his daughter. Just a bad dream, he thinks. She's had them before. Yet he can't help but worry when she cries out again as he pads down the hallway. Stepping through her doorway, he expects to find her sitting up in bed, frightened by a nightmare. But the nightmare is his. It's real. And it's just beginning....

Something is burning Ash's daughter alive. Something horrible that is spreading beyond the walls of their home, and taking no prisoners. Thirty seconds later, Ash will discover his daughter isn't the only one in his family infected, and as his world spins, coming apart at the seams, a team of armed men in biohazard suits bursts into his house. But these aren't the good guys. They haven't come to save Ash's family. They've come to separate them, to finish what they started. The problem is, Ash refuses to disappear. He wants only one thing: to find those responsible. Because humanity is on the brink of execution. And man is pulling the trigger.

Critic reviews

"Like a fever, Sick makes you sweat and keeps you up all night, wondering what the hell is happening. It'll make your heart race like someone shot you with an EpiPen. You think Battles was badass before? He just cranked it up to 500 joules. CLEAR!" (popculturenerd.com)

Loved it

Well written and well read. Kept you riveted to what would happen next. The main characters were easy to like and follow, if you like suspense you won't be disappointed,

Barely good enough to give book 2 a look...

What did you like best about Sick? What did you like least?

Believable plot Too short... but just good enough to start the 2nd book. Poor character development.

Would you be willing to try another book from Brett Battles? Why or why not?

Trying book 2 of the Project Eden series but after 3 hours in there are too many holes in the story-line. Decided to return all 3 books I purchased from this series after the leader Matt says that Captain Ash has to lead the effort to the journey up north to get the people in charge of the project. Other than being immune to the virus the captain has no identifiable skill sets to show why he has to go and is the only person capable of pulling off the job.

What about MacLeod Andrews’s performance did you like?

Very good...ranks up there with some of the best I've heard.

Do you think Sick needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

Has a follow up book...

Any additional comments?

Disappointed. I've listened to a large amount of these type stories and this attempt is sub-par in my opinion but I tried since the reviews were very good. Since the books are returnable suggest trying out based solely on the reviews from others. As for me I can see the writer has talent so I may try one of his other series.

Well performed but a Formulaic Story

Would you try another book from Brett Battles and/or MacLeod Andrews?

No, I would not be interested in following this story or these authors

Has Sick turned you off from other books in this genre?

No- I like the genre

What about MacLeod Andrews’s performance did you like?

I thought the performance was very solid.

Did Sick inspire you to do anything?

Nope

Any additional comments?

I think this is a condensed version of Stephen King's The Stand. Tough to compare to King's classic- but it didn't hold up.

tolerable but not very interesting

the narrator was pretty good but the story itself was just middle of the road. typical bad people trying to rid the earth of its population by virus. immune guy escapes and strong arms his way into rescuing his immune kids from testing. other side stories and characters not worth mentioning. meh.

Fun read.

Although this storyline seems to be more and more common these days, I did enjoy the book. I also thought the narrator did a good job, and it was a nice little "read" for a couple of days spent in the car. He's got me hooked enough to follow up with the sequel, if that says anything.

A three tissue box story!

Not sure I'll get any more of the series because I don't ordinarily like this type of story because it's too close to something that could easily be happening right now. On the other hand, I may have to get at least one more to see if things get any better.

Really enjoyed this first one in the series!

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The first one in the series, Mr. Battles does an excellent job of portraying the characters in a likable and believable way. This is my third book that I have read by the author. I have been impressed with all three books, so far. I am already starting the next one in this series. Give this one a go. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Can't wait to listen to them all!!!

So intriguing! I loved this book and only hope the rest of the series is this good. If so, I've found a great new author to recommend!
