Publisher's summary

The basis for the blockbuster motion picture directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Shutter Island by New York Times bestselling author Dennis Lehane is a gripping and atmospheric psychological thriller where nothing is quite what it seems. The New York Times calls Shutter Island, “Startlingly original.” The Washington Post raves, “Brilliantly conceived and executed.”

A masterwork of suspense and surprise from the author of Mystic River and Gone, Baby, Gone, Shutter Island carries the listener into a nightmare world of madness, mind control, and CIA Cold War paranoia and is unlike anything you’ve ever heard before.

Excellent choice!

This story is so intricate and complex. It isn't just a straight line with a curve at the end, its a collection of dynamics and moving parts that set the story in motion; PTSD, federal agents, concentration camps, moral ambiguity in war and medicine. Many elements which cannot be completely grasped by one person in one life, but glimpsed by many in this one book.

Top Notch!!!

The book and the movie are very similar. Closest I've seen in a long time. Both very good.

Narrator is What Made This Absolutely Spectacular!

This was the absolute best narrator I believe I have ever heard! I could tell the different characters before he was able to identify them for me. He LIVED each and every part and you could hear it in his voice.
The book itself was also without fail. It was well written and intriguing, to say the least. Spellbinding. Made me think, but didn't confuse me. I will definitely be checking into this author and narrator for more from them both. It's lengthy, but worth every minute. Worth your time for sure!

Weird ending to the story
I’ve seen the movie, never really understood it.
Still a weird book

Great performance and story, poor editing.

The performance and the story were great. But the editing could use some work. For one, the chapters don't line up at all. There are 24 chapters in the book but it's only broken into 12 chapters or so here. Second, some chapter transitions are very abrupt, others have too long of a pause. Sometimes the reader gets much louder for a few seconds and not because he's yelling or anything of the sort.

This place makes me wonder...

Dennis Lehane its probably the best noir writer currently working and this is a masterpiece of storytelling and atmosphere.
Dark and gritty, Shutter Island is a masterfull detective story, that even if you saw Scorcese movie it's worth listening to this one.
Just dont expect the best quote of the movie to be there...

Gripping drama!

The narrator brought this to life! I completely forgot it was a book. Bravo! Author! Author!

Keeps you riveted until the end

I am an avid reader and listen to a lot of audiobooks because of my long commutes. There are very few that I would recommend as highly as this one. The opening was a little slow but once the reader is ushered into Shutter Island, the narrative moves at a quick pace, taking you on a psychological thrill ride that keeps you guessing. The narrator does a great job of illuminating the characters. This is not a typical predictable read!

Great Listen!

I really enjoyed this book! The narrative was vivid and engaging, and I was drawn into the world on Shutter Island completely. I know that this is a popular movie, and normally I would read rather than watch the story but I do want to see what the movie version lools like -- the mood was so much a part of the story. The narration was wonderful -- would recommend to anyone for a great weekend read/listen.

Creepy!

This was an extremely entertaining listen. Honestly, this is one of those books I'm glad I listened to versus reading. Very dramatic, lots of atmosphere, with plenty of good, creepy twists. The narrator was superb. My only complaint is the lack of depth. Defines scary ride. 3.5 stars
