Publisher's summary

A prisoner languishes in a Phoenix jail cell, accused of brutally slaying his estranged wife. No one believes the man is innocent, except the new female sheriff of Cochise County, in town for a crash course in police training.

Joanna Brady is out of her jurisdiction, and possibly in over her head. For a human monster is on the prowl, hiding the grisly evidence of his horrific crimes in the vast emptiness of the Arizona desert. And an impromptu investigation, with no official sanction and no back up, is drawing a cold, ingenious serial killer much too close to Brady for comfort.

Shoot Don't Shoot

The series by J.A. Jance with the main character of Joanna Bradey is great. Try to start from the beginning, and get listen to all the books in the series. Try to do it in order because they follow the life of Joanna and her family. If you hop scotch around you still get great entertainment, but you loss the effect of following her life. The fact that it happens in Arizona is fun for me because I live there. Shoot Don't Shoot, just like all in the series is great. This is the one where she goes to police academy in Peoria, and meets the man she is going to marry. Always along with a couple of murders here and there. Light listen, and great entertainment.

Love Joanna Brady!

I'm thoroughly enjoying the Joanna Brady series. I read one farther down the line many years ago and I've rediscovered them recently. She is a terrific character, Jenny is adorable, Eleanor is aggravating, and the cast of Side characters gives one something to look forward to as Joanna sifts through them in her new job as Sheriff of Cochise County. if you enjoy a well-written book about a good character and a little mystery, try the Joanna Brady series. Joanna doesn't spend much time in the office in this particular book as she is off learning how to be a sheriff, But great characters here, too.

Very good

A most enjoyable story by the master JA Jance. Shoot, don’t shoot was all I had hoped it would be.

Sheriff school

Joanna Brady is off to school to learn how to be a police officer. Things don't go very smoothly, however, and she learns more from real life than in class. The villain is, well, super villainous, and chilled my blood several times. I had to laugh reading about her daughter's hair disaster - reminded me of a situation with my grandmother when I was about the same age as Joanna's daughter! The narrator isn't the greatest, but does an adequate job.

good book

I love J.A. Jance's books, especially those featuring Joanna Brady. I actually read my first Joanna Brady a week after I moved to Arizona, having found it in the empty house I moved into, so I actually got to know my new state by reading about Sheriff Brady in Cochise County as well as one of Jance's other characters, Ali Reynolds, who supposedly lives in Sedona. The books are very accurate geographically. After reading my first two, I've listened to several Jance books at Audible, including some featuring Seattle's J.P. Beaumont. They all have both interesting stories and interesting protagonists whose lives change in interesting and believable ways over time. I do prefer her female protagonists, though, but maybe because I am female. Somehow, I missed Shoot Don't Shoot, although I read the later ones and had wondered how the widowed Joanna suddenly got a boyfriend. I found out listening to this book!

My only complaint is the irritating voice the narrator gives Joanna's daughter, Jenny. I always liked Jenny but the very odd and unflattering voice given to her by Ms. Huber was enough to make me dread it when she came into the story. The narration wasn't bad otherwise but if you want to hear good narration with a Jance book, listen to something with Karen Ziemba.

The story is a 5 star but Jenny's voice was so amazingly irritating that I gave it a 4. That's how bad it is.

Awesome Author

It's nice to read about an area I'm familiar with. Being an Arizona native, it's fun to recognize the areas she writes about.
