NOW AN HBO® LIMITED SERIES STARRING AMY ADAMS, NOMINATED FOR EIGHT EMMY AWARDS, INCLUDING OUTSTANDING LIMITED SERIES FROM THE NUMBER ONE NEW YORK TIMES BEST-SELLING AUTHOR OF GONE GIRL

Fresh from a brief stay at a psych hospital, reporter Camille Preaker faces a troubling assignment: She must return to her tiny hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls. For years, Camille has hardly spoken to her neurotic, hypochondriac mother or to the half-sister she barely knows: a beautiful 13-year-old with an eerie grip on the town. Now, installed in her old bedroom in her family's Victorian mansion, Camille finds herself identifying with the young victims - a bit too strongly. Dogged by her own demons, she must unravel the psychological puzzle of her own past if she wants to get the story - and survive this homecoming.

Critic reviews

  • Mystery Writers of America 2007 Edgar Nominee, Best First Novel by an American Author

"A witty, stylish, and compelling debut. A real winner." (Harlan Coben)

"Flynn delivers a great whodunit.... Piercingly effective and genuinely terrifying." (Kirkus Reviews)

"To say this is a terrific debut novel is really too mild. I haven't read such a relentlessly creepy family saga since John Farris' All Heads Turn as the Hunt Goes By, and that was 30 years ago, give or take. Sharp Objects isn't one of those scare-and-retreat books; its effect is cumulative. I found myself dreading the last 30 pages or so but was helpless to stop turning them. Then, after the lights were out, the story just stayed there in my head, coiled and hissing, like a snake in a cave. An admirably nasty piece of work, elevated by sharp writing and sharper insights." (Stephen King)

What a surprise!

Gillian Flynn is such a great writer. I hadn't read/ listened to this book but I own the HBO version on DVD and have watched it several times. I'm glad I watched it first because it would have been so disappointing the other way around. After listening to this story there were so many things that made way more sense because they were finally fully explained . Other things were added in the HBO version due to the book's first person point of view.
If you haven't seen or read either version and are wondering if this book is for you the answer is yes... as long as you like gritty crime solving stories with big reveals.

Great Story

Gillians Flynn's ability to create these amazingly tortured characters that don't always have you rooting for protagonist but then is also able to make you sympathize with the the antagonists.

great story of broken people who cant help to break others too.

Loved!!

I really enjoyed this book and all the twisted characters. I kept trying to guess the ending and was half right in the end. I could not stop listening to it until I was finished.

Not for the soft hearted…

I read this book because I saw that is a show on HBO. I was interested in figuring out what sharp objects was about. Quickly I was sucked in to the the story. Gillian Flynn does a good job of getting you into her stories. I have a very tender heart. It was a difficult read/listen for me especially the ending. I do not think I will watch the show since it was hard for me to read/listen.

A Decent Book

This was a decent book. Very descriptive with colorful and imaginative wording which made it easy to visualize many things in the book. Characters could have been more thoroughly developed and it would have made it easier to love or hate them. As it was I was quite indifferent to the characters in the book. The evil characters were not brought to light until the end, although if you hadn't figured it out sooner then you were blind. The hero and heroine needed more dimension. The narration was very good. This may be what kept my interest the most. Overall it did its job. Listening to the Audible book allowed time to pass on my drive. It was interesting enough to keep listening but not so interesting that I would consider it a book I couldn't put down had I been holding an actual copy as opposed to listening to it on Audible.

Antebellum Anxst

Though predictable in parts the ends twist adds a nice surprise that leaves readers more satisfied than in some of her works. I didn’t see the HBO series but could place the the known cast in each of the audiobook’s characters.
Surprised that this was one of Flynn’s earlier works as it seemed more put together than some of her later, more lauded novels.
Worth the audible credit!

creepy, kept interest

Show is very similar to book. Unnerving that this type of thing really does happen in our world. Sad how realistic their small town meanness was described
