"Top 3 out of his 23 Davenport Novels"

All the Davenport Novels are worth a read, this particular book is great because it revolves around a younger, crazier, slutty, always manipulative Lucas, a group of fugitives that are both interesting & dangerous, & many of Davenports close friends in the future are cementing they're loyalties from these earlier novels. For some reason I read so many of the other Prey novels before I came back & read this one which is technically the 2nd in the series... It was worth it almost to the point I wish I read it earlier. But all his books are great & the development of Lucas & his family all take place throughout the series but this book is still in the stages before he had to worry about another woman, kids, politics, & future responsibilities I ended up reading at almost the same time because I was reading Silken Prey shorty after....

Highly recommend this book... LUCAS is establishing why he is such a bada$* & has the reputation he does....

    "Lucas Davenport = Great"
If you could sum up Shadow Prey in three words, what would they be?

    Davenport, suspenseful, exciting

Who was your favorite character and why?

While I guess Davenport but another character, it would be Lily. I enjoy the whole cast of characters in the Prey novels though.

    Any additional comments?

I have read most of the Prey series and love it. Am going back and listening to them in order. This is his second book. The narration is excellent. Does not disappoint. I highly recommend this series.

"Sandford and Ferrone - Match Made in Heaven"

Is it possible to fall in love with an author/narrator/protagonist combo? Yes, indeed. Sandford, Ferrone and that sometimes naughty Davenport rock the story.

John Sandford used incredibly good judgment choosing Richard Ferrone. Long live authors who "listen" to their own books being read!

If you could sum up Shadow Prey in three words, what would they be?

    Exciting, sarcastic, fun

What was one of the most memorable moments of Shadow Prey?

When Lucas first meets Shadow in the apartment

What does Richard Ferrone bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Richard Ferrone has become Lucas Davenport. His voice brings the right amount of edge, sarcasm and humor. He is a great narrator.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes if only I could.

    Any additional comments?

So happy that the old Prey novels have been released in this fashion with Richard Ferrone reading them. Hats off to John Sandford, great author.

    "mildly entertaining but hokey"

I have loved John Sandford but this one was pretty lame. Predictable romance that was very melodramatic and a convoluted story that I really didn't find compelling.

Would you consider the audio edition of Shadow Prey to be better than the print version?

One of the best in the Prey series. Subtle yet compelling and with a suspenseful plot. Richard Ferrone is a forceful and very listenable narrator.

    "Is there a point?"
What disappointed you about Shadow Prey?

    Lack of focused story line.

What could John Sandford have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Better character development, improve flow of story line.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Richard Ferrone?

    yes

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Is there a point here or is the author being paid by the word?

    Any additional comments?

This book has an interesting story to tell, but that is the end of what's good about this book. The storyline wanders in and around without really developing characters and never seems to get to the point. Never ending meaningless dialogue and a disjointed storyline made this book tedious and no worth finishing.

    "I'm done with the series"

I was ready to settle into a new series starring Lucas Davenport. I liked Rules of Prey a lot. But this one was a put-off on several levels. I felt like the author wrote about native Americans without knowing very much about them. (Contrast this with the Tony Hillerman books) However, he included all of the "no good" stereotypes. We had drunken, drugged, miserable Indian characters in this tale, not one of whom inspired any real interest or worth for the plot. But it was the Lucas character that left me disgusted....the way he uses women with no regret. He just goes on about how he loves women, can't help it, and...implied...."take it or leave it." He's now a father...but that changes nothing. I felt sympathy for the New York lady cop who fell into step with this character and cries and begs at the end. Not fun to read. I'm not easily put off by personality flaws. So many great characters in other action novels are deeply flawed....Like Jo Nesbo's Harry....but this Lucas guy just bugs me!!!

"Sandford's Prey series is superb except this one"

The Prey series is a truly wonderful collection of books. Davenport is a complex character in the best of ways. He is a dodgy, reckless, self made rich guy with some unpleasant traits but he sure is fun. Intelligent friends and fellow cops add more humour and insight into the dark situations the barking mad criminals create. The descriptive writing is beautiful and thoughtful too, never jumping to simplistic assumptions about the forces that drive human beings.
The audiobooks are just as they should be - unabridged and most importantly, read by the same excellent reader. When you have such a rich collection of characters as this you obviously form ideas and images about them. Changing the reader of a series is unbelievably stupid. It ruins continuity, and the rhythm and pace of the entire book. It is like turning the TV on to watch Inspector Morse and finding that he's played by an unknown actor.

So, what is wrong with this one? It is the second Prey book and was the only one not recorded at the time. Perhaps because is was no good? It is drawn out with a weak storyline, a tedious sexual affair and unfocused baddies. All the things that John Sandford's Prey books are not, usually.

Please don't judge the Prey series by this one. The best in the series in my opinion are two of the best books I have ever heard, the two Rinker books, Certain and Mortal Prey. There's not enough room or time here to do them justice. Perhaps it is best to start at the begining with Rules of Prey and omit this one.
