Publisher's summary

All New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum has to do is bring in semi-retired bail jumper Eddie DeChooch. For an old man he's still got a knack for slipping out of sight...and raising hell. How else can Stephanie explain the bullet-riddled corpse in Eddie's garden? Who else would have a clue as to why two of Stephanie's friends suddenly vanished? For answers Stephanie has the devil to pay: her mentor, Ranger. The deal? He'll give Stephanie all the help she needs...if she gives him everything he wants.

As if things weren't complicated enough, Stephanie's just discovered her Grandma Mazur's own unmentionable alliance with Eddie. Add a series of unnerving break-ins, not to mention the bombshell revelation leveled by Stephanie's estranged sister, and Stephanie's ready for some good news. Unfortunately, a marriage proposal from Joe Morelli, the love of her life, isn't quite cutting it. And now, murder, a randy paramour, a wily mobster, death threats, extortion, and a triple kidnapping aside, Stephanie's really got the urge to run for her life.

Huge Disappointment!

Any additional comments?

Recently started this series and had great fun listening to the first six books read by CJ Critt (although I had to get #5&6 from the library because Audible only had the abridged versions with a different narrator). It's always irritating when the narrator is changed mid-series, especially when Critt made the characters come alive, but the reviews for the books narrated by Lorelei King were good so I started book seven with high hopes of a good listen - Huge Disappointment! King doesn't deliver the sassy, energetic Stephanie of the first books and I found the voice used for the grandmother to be shrill and totally irritating. Still love the story but this narrator may send me back to the print version.

Good book, crappy narrator

I'm a huge fan of the Stephanie Plumb books and this one, just like all the others always make me laugh. I started listening to the series in order from the beginning and grew used to the way C.J. Critt narrated the books. When I started listening to the books narrated by Loreli King, I was disappointed. I know every narrator has their own style but I don't care much for Loreli King's narration of the books. She makes Ranger sound like some idiot hispanic thug and her Jersey accent could use some work. All in all, great book, just not all that impressed with the narration.

Sssibilant Ssseven

I urge anyone interested in purchasing this audiobook to listen to the entire sample before they burn that credit.

This review is primarily about the narrator, because she's so bad that I can't keep the thread of the book, and halfway through it, I can't even tell you who Stephanie is trying to catch or if there's a subplot.

The first four unabridged audiobooks in this series are read by CJ Critt. They're excellent. Books 5 and 6 are not available in unabridged format on Audible, so I bought the ebooks and let my Kindle read them to me. They were very good. I bought extra credits in order to buy Books 7-12 so I wouldn't have to stop listening. I'm going to keep this one so that I can post a review, but I'm returning 8-12, and maybe someday I will read the rest of the series in ebook form, but the joy is gone.

King seems to be a popular reader, and for the life of me I cannot understand why. She has a speech defect, so every S comes out like she's hissssing in your ear. She can't do other voices AT ALL - I couldn't believe how godawful the other characters' voices are. She sounds self-satisfied, which is not suitable for an inept bounty hunter who keeps losing her quarry and can't get her life together. Her comic timing is nearly nonexistent, so the hilarity is dulled to ho-hum. And she always puts the emphasis on the last words in the sentence, so we get "'You'll never take me alive,' (pause) HE SAID." And her voice for Morelli - would be better suited for the voice of Regan in The Exorcist. I'd rather stick a fork in my eye than keep listening.

There seems to be no sound engineer and no producer/director in play here; they could have saved this book by adjusting the recording to dull the hissing and by...replacing Lorelei King. I listened to samples of later books to see if King improves. She doesn't, so I won't be listening to the rest of the sssseries. And nor will I be buying any more books read by Lorelei King or produced by Audio Renaissssssance.

Love Stephanie Plum

I started with book 1 on Audible and fell in love with the character, Stephanie Plum, and the narrator, Lori Petty. I listened to a sample of Loralei King and swore I was not going to listen any further (I loved Lori Petty's Jersey accent). But when it came time for book 7, I caved because I wanted more Stephanie Plum. After listening to this book -- I must say, Loralei King does a tremendous job and I've become a fan. It takes me some time to get use to different narrators but after the first little bit, I was able to adapt. I'm glad I caved because I really enjoy Loralei's rendition of Stephanie and all the other wonderful characters. As for the book itself--loved it--true to form for the series and Janet Evanovich.

narration is horrible...

this book is like none of the other four before, characters are bad... There's no words for how bad this book is. It twill be my last one of the series... possibly from the author and the narrator... out of almost 75 books this rates right up there with the worst of all the books I've listen to

Another great Plum adventure!

I love all the Stephanie Plum novels and am glad Audible finally got the unabridged version of this one. The book has great characters and an entertaining plot. Also, Lorelei King does a great job of narrating again. She really brings the story to life with different voices for the characters.

Using my trick to enjoy this one!

Lorelei King's distracting voice characterization for Grandma Mazur was the worst of all of the three readers of the series. I was glad to see they did not keep the reader for the abridged versions of books five and six of the series because she was the "speedy gonzales" version of narrators and I felt I needed a Valium trying to listen to her read.

King's calm eloquent reading style made the story a less excitable journey than it could have been but, otherwise she was passable.

At first, I felt C. J. Critt was the worst narrator I had ever heard, but now, since these books took me on the "Goldi Lockes" hunt for the perfect narrator, I believe she was actually the best reader of the Stephanie Plum Series! Critt did at least make the exciting fight scenes exciting, and Grandma Mazur's comic relief scenes comical, unlike King's annoyingly shrill voice choice for Grandma which loses all of the comedy in the lines for me. So I'm eating my bowl of "crow" on this one.

All in all, it is still a good book and I will listen to the others. I found a trick for listening to good stories read by narrator's who have reading styles that irritate me. I choose to think of them as a favorite aunt or uncle telling me about their life experience. This mental view makes me more patient and accepting of the narrator's vocal flaws.

So, I had to use my trick with this one too!

Love the series!

This is the first time I have read this author and have fallen in love with the Stephanie Plum series. I downloaded all 13 books and listened to them all within a week. I couldn’t wait to hear what adventures (and mishaps!) that Stephanie, Joe, Ranger, Lula and the rest of the gang would get into. I’ve read some of the previous reviews. I agree with some and disagree with others. I disagree that it gets old and complacent that Stephanie finds herself in the same situations in every book. It appears to me that Stephanie’s character is just one of those people that trouble and mayhem seem to find. I do agree that narrator Lori Petty is the voice of Stephanie. Narrator Debi Mazar’s accent is a bit heavy for audio books and then after all this Lorilei King takes over as narrator for the rest of the series. While Ms. King’s character voices are awesome (she has such a range!) her Stephanie voice has no Jersey accent at all and sound just a little too “blue blood”. Otherwise Ms. King is a joy to listen to. You will fall in love with Ranger and Joe! Both are too hot to handle……no wonder Stephanie can’t choose between the two!

Don’t let the narrator changes deter you from listening to this funny charming, and at times mysterious series. You won’t be disappointed if you’re looking for something light hearted to listen to.

Narrator spoils the book

loved the story and the plot, big fan of the Stephanie plum series, but not a big fan of the narrator period she seemed really fake, and not genuine at all. her accents left a lot to be desired. her narration made it difficult to finish the book.

New narrator changes all the characters

I just finished Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone series & being a fan of the Stephanie Plum series thought I would try it next. There is a weird disruption after the 4th story. A new narrator who gives every character a different feel, which is not necessarily bad. But in this case her reading is over the top and most characters becomes a ridiculous, caricature of themselves, including Grandma Mazur & Lula. Joe Morelli morphs into someone else. The New Jersey accent which had been such a part of the characters in previous readings is gone. Although for some reason, neither narrator chose to have Stephanie speak with a Jersey accent. And audiobooks 5 & 6 only exist in abridged versions, but for full price, so I skipped those. I am going to try to finish this book & really hope the narrator finds a more believable voice for the characters. They are funny, light hearted stories that I really enjoy & make me laugh out loud at times.
