Publisher's summary

#1 New York Times best-selling author Tami Hoag returns with her second thriller in the Deeper than the Dead microseries, exploring the early days of forensic investigation, the characteristics of innocence-and the nature of evil.

Marissa Fordham had a past full of secrets, a present full of lies. Everyone knew of her, but no one knew her.

When Marissa is found brutally murdered, with her young daughter, Haley, resting her head on her mother's bloody breast, she sends the idyllic California town of Oak Knoll into a tailspin. Already on edge with the upcoming trial of the See- No-Evil killer, residents are shocked by reports of the crime scene, which might not have been discovered for days had it not been for a chilling 911 call: a small child's voice saying, "My daddy hurt my mommy."

Sheriff's detective Tony Mendez faces a puzzle with nothing but pieces that won't fit. To assist with his witness, Haley, he calls teacher-turned-child advocate Anne Leone. Anne's life is hectic enough-she's a newlywed and a part- time student in child psychology, and she's the star witness in the See-No-Evil trial. But one look at Haley, alone and terrified, and Anne's heart is stolen.

As Tony and Anne begin to peel back the layers of Marissa Fordham's life, they find a clue fragment here, another there. And just when it seems Marissa has taken her secrets to the grave, they uncover a fact that puts Anne and Haley directly in the sights of a killer: Marissa Fordham never existed.

an alright listen...that leaves you disappointed

I enjoyed the first book a whole lot so when i realized there was another one revolving around the same characters i just had to get it. I really was disappointed though, while in the first book you can relate to everyone perfectly, nobody really mad any sense to me in this one.

I loved the first book and fell in love with the protagonist too, she seemed like such a strong woman who could overcome anything, but in this book there was simply too much drama going on for my taste. Everything was going way too fast and things got confusing which was why i had to stop at some point. While the first book was the kind of book you just could not stop listening to and had to take everywhere with you just to know what happens next.

This one leaves you rather disappointed. I think the story is a great idea, but what really annoyed me was that repeatedly things like " This does not happen in a city like this" etc. kept coming up, also I really hated that the vies switched so much. I don't know, I really would not recommend it...

narrator was spot on as usual. Story was good except to much happening to one character. just my opinion.

Narration takes away from the story

Like most audible readers, I am usually doing something else while I listen. This narrator's voice changes are so subtle and there are so many women in the book, I frequently have to rewind to find out who was talking -- especially in the beginning when the story line is developing. She also plays with a Brooklyn accent that sometimes sounds like a Jewish accent. Very frustrating. Tami Hoag's books are excellent as always, but I am disappointed with this quality and hoping the next book is better (even though it is the same narrator), since I have already purchased it. My first audible book by Hoag was narrated by Scott Brick, and you can hardly top his work. Keep writing, Tami, but get a new narrator.

Good story. Poor narration

I love Tami Hoag’s books. This was no exception. The only complaint I have is the narrator. I would’ve given her a good rating, except for the way she does the character voices. The story takes place in California, so WHY do several of the men have Jersey accents? It makes no sense. Maybe she just doesn’t know how to do men’s voices.

Great Series!

A well written series with well developed characters and decent plots. Be sure to read the first book in the series (which was also terrific) as this book is full of spoilers if you read it first.

Not as good as the first, 2 1/2 stars

I enjoyed the first book in the series even if it was a little gruesome. This one was just too predictable, I'm not sure what everyone else was hearing that made this an edge of your seat listen, it was okay.

The publisher's summary gives you the idea right from the start that things are not always what they seem. And the friend, what an idiot!
