Publisher's summary

Its cool gulf breezes lured him from a life of danger. Its dark undercurrents threatened to destroy him. After 10 years of living life on the edge, it was hard for Doc Ford to get that addiction to danger out of his system. But spending each day watching the sun melt into Dinkins Bay and the moon rise over the mangrove trees, cooking dinner for his beautiful neighbor, and dispensing advice to the locals over a cold beer lulled him into letting his guard down.

Then Rafe Hollins appeared. How could he refuse his old friend's request---even if it would put him back on the firing line? Even if it would change forever the life he'd built here on Sanibel Island?

a self contained world and often interesting

I often go back to Randy Wayne White when I can not decide what I want to listen to at the moment. This is not to say it is a comfort zone like romance novels. I think it does have the communal and continuing history of romance with teeth. Dick Hill gets more comfortable with the voices in later books but he is a talented voice. There is much to like from the series and much to get exasperated with as well. I guess I like the emotional music of coming close and pushed away. The books are always interesting for social and scientific information. The writer has and interesting approach to reflection.

My first Doc Ford read...

Not exactly what I was expecting. I'll read another, see how it goes. Hopefully gets better.

Excellent Story and narration.

I picked up this title based on a reference in a John Sandford novel, and I thoroughly enjoyed the listen. I shall continue on with the series, and hope the storytelling is as enjoyable.

Dick Hill's narration is, as always, the best.

This was my first Doc Ford, now I need the series

Would you consider the audio edition of Sanibel Flats to be better than the print version?

The action seems to move fluidly with this narrator.

What did you like best about this story?

He is a troubled character who always seems to do the right thing, even if it is not in his best interest.

Which scene was your favorite?

The scene with the porcupine fish was very inventive. I had just seen two of these the previous day to hearing the episode.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No. the book is not moving in that way, it is more male like.

Any additional comments?

This book was so good that I want to listen to the entire series.
Hopefully the narration remains consistent .

Really enjoyed book one in this series

I listened to this book on the recommendation of a friend and I am glad I did. It starts a bit slow, but then does build to a very interesting and enjoyable story. Good character development, and rich details of the life in the gulf.

Double Standard Reins Supreme

I came to this first book in the series after reading a paperback, The Man Who Invented Florida, which comes much later in the series, where apparently the MC has evolved to a certain extent. And I guess I’m guilty of holding works of art from another time to my standards but I can’t help getting stuck on the glaring double standard that the MC in Sanibel Flats employs when judging a woman who was his friend by a standard he omits in his own behavior.

This book has some great parts, including kidnapping, murder, drugs and two competing South America dictators. There’s good character development and, at one point, it even seems that the MC is developing a friendship with a woman, but alas, he doesn’t know how to do that and isn’t willing to look at her as other than a possession or conquest. That soured it for me.

I have to say that I don’t understand why other reviewers panned the narrator, I loved him! He’s the only reason I kept listening to this particular tale. His accents were spot on and I loved the way he made the character Thomlinson sound like Jack Nicholson!

AWESOME STORY!

I was skeptical at first but became engrossed in the story as it progressed. I have been to Sanibel and Captiva. It gave me a desire to look into the area more deeply. Good Job Mr. White and Mr. Hill!

most enjoyable

This was my first introduction to Doc Ford and I was thoroughly entertained. The author has recreated the beloved main character from Steinbeck's Cannery Row and the reader gets to follow him on new adventures. Definitely worth a listen to.
