Publisher's summary

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts comes a seductive and suspenseful novel of dangerous liaisons and family betrayals....

Photographer Jo Ellen Hathaway thought she'd escaped the house called Sanctuary long ago. She'd spent her loneliest years there, after the sudden, unexplained disappearance of her mother. Yet the sprawling inn on an island off the Georgia coast continues to haunt her dreams. And now, even more haunting are the pictures someone is sending her: strange close-ups and candids, culminating in the most shocking portrait of all - a photo of her mother - naked, beautiful, and dead.

Now Jo must return to the island, and to her bitterly estranged family. With the help of Nathan Delaney - who was on the island the summer her mother disappeared - Jo hopes to learn the truth about the tragic past. But Sanctuary may be the most dangerous place of all.

Too gruesome

It would have been nice if audible had put a rating or warning of the graphic ness. I had no idea a Nora Roberts wrote books like this. It is well written and performed but is not for the faint of heart. She describes several rapes and murders in detail. It is apparent this book was written a decade ago. It was so disturbing I couldn’t finish it or return it bc I had listened so far. I’ll

Keep in mind this is from the 1990s

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I enjoyed the setting, and the mystery itself was fun, but it's glaringly obvious it's set in the 1990s. I'm amazed at how much female/male characterization in Robert's books has changed over the years. The men in this book almost always force themselves on the women - and the women just melt in their arms and give into their passions... which had me rolling my eyes at points. Puh-lease.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I'd read it was a "surprise" twist ending... can't say I was blown away by it. It was a good plot generally.

What does Sandra Burr bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She did a good job, but nothing stellar.

Was Sanctuary worth the listening time?

Yes - interesting just to see how Roberts' writing has changed, and gotten better over the years.

Any additional comments?

I wish they'd post the publishing date of the book on the main page. Obviously nothing wrong with reading books written 10-20 years ago - but it helps prepare me for the tone of the book.

Intriguing

When Nora Roberts writes a book that scares me it really scares me. This was a very well written interesting book. Good read.

Good book!

Let's face it, Nora Roberts is a master at this stuff, and even though this is obviously an older novel, it doesn't disappoint. The characters are very well-developed and I fell in love with all of them! There are about 4 different romantic stories going on, but enough time is given to each story so that you feel invested in the characters. I found myself smiling a lot and even chuckling aloud in a couple of places. The mystery aspect was also well-played.

The narrator, however... while she did a great job with character distinction, the voices she chose to represent each character seemed a bit off, particularly with the males. I don't mean to nitpick, but isn't that one of the reasons we choose audio books over hard copies? Anyway, if the narration had been a little better, it would have made a good book great.

Soooo well written

A really good book - all along you think you know who it might be, then you are almost convinced but can't believe it to be true, then it twists!

Really great and again a TRUE Nora Roberts book - 3 lives, 3 twists - lovely

Thank you

Interesting once you get into it.

I enjoyed the story line once it got going. For the first several chapters I wondered if I had made a mistake purchasing this book. I thought the narration was good capturing different voices so it was easy to distinguish which character was speaking. The plot line had a nice twist to it.

If you could sum up Sanctuary in three words, what would they be?

Suspense, Humor, Romance

What other book might you compare Sanctuary to and why?

I like when Nora Roberts add Murder Mystery along with humor and romance well rounded book that keeps you listening.

Have you listened to any of Sandra Burr’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I Love Sandra and have purchased a few of her audio's just because she was the narrator

Another great book

The book started out slow while Nora Roberts builds the characters, but once she is done with character building, it was really good.
Lots of twists and turns, with a little romance.
I would recommend this book to anyone.

Enjoyed the story but got tired of the narrator

This was a suspenseful, didn't figure out the "nut" until very close to the end, which I think makes it a good story. But, as I noted in the headline, I got so tired of the narrator that I was ready for it to end. I generally pick a number of the books that I listen to based on the narrator--I thought I like Sandra Burr better (I will still listen her, I think). One other thing on the story, I will say NR could have done a better in her Epilogue.
