Publisher's summary

In the year 2060, sophisticated investigative tools can help catch a killer. But there are some questions even the most advanced technologies cannot answer...
Harlan Coben says, "J.D. Robb's In Death novels are can't-miss pleasures." Her latest is no exception, as the priest at a Catholic funeral mass brings the chalice to his lips - and falls over dead...

When Detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas confirms that the consecrated wine contained potassium cyanide, she's determined to solve the murder of Father Miguel Flores, despite her discomfort with her surroundings. It's not the bodegas and pawn shops of East Harlem that bother her, though the neighborhood is a long way from the stone mansion she shares with her billionaire husband Roarke. It's all that holiness flying around at St. Christobal's that makes her uneasy.
A search of the victim's sparsely furnished room reveals little - except for a carefully hidden religious medal with a mysterious inscription, and a couple of underlined Bible passages. The autopsy reveals more: faint scars of knife wounds, a removed tattoo - and evidence of plastic surgery suggesting "Father Flores" may not be the man his parishioners thought. Now, as Eve pieces together clues that suggest identity theft, gang connections, and a deeply personal act of revenge, she hopes to track down whoever committed this unholy act. Until a second murder - in front of an even larger crowd of worshippers - knocks the whole investigation sideways.

Lots of turns

Susan and Robb make for a powerful combo. Susan really brings Robb's world and characters to life.
This book has a lot of ups and downs, fast paced. I love the compassion Eve has in this one. The published summary covers basics.

Another Murder, Another Great Story.

I enjoy this series so much I started to listen to the whole series from Book One as a retirement gift to myself.
The core team of characters are a Hoot and make laugh out loud. The murder mystery is always a challenge to me.
What better way to start my day than with a chapter of two, ENJOY!

love, love, LOVE

Any additional comments?

Seriously - this series was brought to life, for me, with the brilliance of Susan Ericksen! I love the stories (for sure formulaic in one sense - but I still avidly listen) JD has given us. The graphic murders that these characters deal with are intense, but the laughter and love between all of them still shine through. I you can DEFINITELY hear it in the voices that Ms. Ericksen gives them! I can't imagine going back to simply reading these for myself, because when I do, I still hear their voices talking in my head. LOVE

GUT WRENCHING, GRIPPING

I'm a lifelong fan of J.D. Roberts/Nora Roberts. I've read many of her books multiple times and curiosity had me choosing to listen to one of the In Death books. I wanted to hear how a voice actor would portray characters that I've been in love with for over 20+ years, characters that my mama and I used to talk about as if we had just met them. Sadly, I can no longer talk to Mama about Eve, Roarke, Peabody & McNab, she's been gone 11 years now, but I think she'd like the overall performance of the actor, though, I think she'd agree with me and dislike the voice given to Peabody. I've become accustomed to it, but I don't like it. That's my biggest gripe about the voiceover work.

The story is fantastic. Being a Southern Baptist Christian, I've always been fascinated by the Catholic church, so a Priest being murdered during Mass had my attention right away. The plot that followed was so engaging. It twisted and turned, veered from 2060 back in time to 2043 (just 20 years from now) to cover gang murders, identity theft that goes much farther than stealing personal data, and the author skillfully manuevers between 2060 and 2043 much like Eve navigates New York traffic and brings it all together in the Interrogation room. There are multiple interrogations but the last two wrap up the murders from 2043-2060 and those committed in between. Eve gives Peabody the lead in the next to last interrogation and it left me in tears which set me up for the rightgeous indignation I felt over the subsequent arrest (with a bit of resisting arrest that made my heart happy) and the final blow that only Lt. Eve Dallas can give during the interrogation.

Roarke's e-skills aren't featured much in this storyline but his other skills are on display in a hysterical scene of sex in Eve's cop car. He was trying to show Eve a bit of what teenage Roarke would do with a lass in a stolen car and what followed had me laughing so hard that tears were flowing, he eventually proved his point but getting there was much more challenging as an adult.

If you're a fan of the In Death series this is a must read and listen to book because it shows the skill of Eve and Peabody, individually and as partners. BUT, if you're new to this series, I encourage you to read one or more of the books because you're missing out on the descriptions of the characters. It's important to remember this is voice ACTING, not someone reading the book. This is a script more than the book. You're missing out by not getting to know other "characters" i.e., the house she comes home to, Cop Central, Summerset, and Galahad, the cat, just to name a few. With the exception of this book, I've read the other In Death books that are in my library. By listening to these books, I'm reliving the original enjoyment I got from reading them, it's why I can critique Peabody's "voice", it doesn't match the one in my head, none of them do, but her's is the most offputting. However, I've been in love with this In Death series for well over twenty plus (20+) years, these characters are like friends to me.

One of JD Robb's least interesting books.

Slow, nothing interesting or new about the usual characters, etc. But hey, it's so old now who cares about this review?!!

Horrible narrator

Good story but slow in along of places and the narrator does a lot of horrible accents and voices that detract from the story
