Publisher's summary

Thirty-four years ago, Violet Sullivan put on her party finery and left for the annual Fourth of July fireworks display. She was never seen again.

In the small California town of Serena Station, tongues wagged. Some said she'd run off with a lover. Some said she was murdered by her husband.

But for the not-quite-seven-year-old daughter Daisy she left behind, Violet's absence has never been explained or forgotten.

Now, 34 years later, she wants the solace of closure.

90% Up to Grafton Standards

This was a well-planned and intriguing story that I really enjoyed 90% of the way through, but I got the impression the author was rushing to meet a deadline at the end. I will continue to read and listen to the alphabet series, but hope the next one continues with hard-hitting, complex mystery all the way through.

I loved this book.

I loved this book. The way she brings everything together is amazing. I was kept guessing until the end.

great until the end

A terrific pager turner until the very end. I was left scratching my head. The culprit's motive was never thoroughly explained.

Cool

I loved it, I am sad that she cannot finish the alphabet, but time for me to move on to next book

Great story

I had previously read this book but it was a pleasure to hear it in the audio version. Grafton’s plotting and handling of characters were as always, masterful. The narrator was skilled in giving distinctly different voices two different characters. Unfortunately she occasionally mispronounced words.

Terrible ending

Love all her books but this one left me flat. No idea what motivated the real killer or any understanding behind his behavior. Felt like a sloppy ending. Lots of time spent on character development for everyone but the real killer

Not the best by the author, but Judy Kaye is great!

Not the best plot, and it did leave you hanging in the end as to the motive of the killer. Could have had more action and less description of places.

Too many characters…?

I cannot ever give a Sue Grafton book a negative review, but there were so many unfamiliar characters in this one that I can’t even be sure who the killer was. Sure I know the name but I’ll have to listen to it over again to figure out what the killers role was in the overall story. Judy Kaye is the BEST.

Grafton Gets Grittier

Sue Grafton is like fine red wine. Each book in her alphabet series is taking her to higher and higher marks in my book. Curl up with Kinsey and the 'S' book, pour a glass of Santa Theresa's finest and bliss out on her creator's grittiest and most convoluted story yet.
