Publisher's summary

The "maddog" murderer who is terrorizing the Twin Cities is two things: insane and extremely intelligent. He kills for the pleasure of it and thoroughly enjoys placing elaborate obstacles to keep police befuddled. Each clever move he makes is another point of pride. But when the brilliant Lieutenant Lucas Davenport, a dedicated cop and a serial killer's worst nightmare, is brought in to take up the investigation, the maddog suddenly has an adversary worthy of his genius.

Excellent Story

Loved the story - the entire 'prey' series as well. Fast paced and well-written, the first episode of the series holds your attention through the last page.

Draws you in and doesn't let go until the end

Lucas Davenport is just an interesting character and this book gives him a wonderful introduction. Davenport is a good guy but not great guy worth rooting for and the Mad Dog is the perfect adversary to get you engaged in the story. At the end of the book, you just can't wait to read this character again and again.

Richard Ferrone's voice is as smooth as butter but with just enough of a rasp that it brings reality to Lucas Davenport's age and experience -- it really fits the character. He also does a good job of bring the other characters to life.

Read this book years ago. Enjoyed Learning as well

I read quite a few of the prey series years ago. I wasn't sure how many, so I decided to start over with the first. Love them.

An OK Police Drama

This is a good book; not great, not inspired, but good. Solid is the word that keeps coming to mind. I did want to see the good guy catch the bad guy, but I was not mesmerized by the story. There is virtually no suspense, and I LIKE the main character, but I did not love him. If you LOVE police stories and/or mysteries, read the Louise Penny Inspector Gamache stories or the Agent Pendergast books or the Onspector Lynley series by Elizabeth George. IN ORDER!

Decent Book

This book did not make me want to listen to any of its sequels. However, is a decent book with an alright storyline & the reader for the audio book is great.

Excellent!

In the past I've listened to several of John Sandfort's books, and liked them all. I saw this one, and since I had missed it previously, decided to purchase it, in the hopes that I would still enjoy this series. I liked it a lot, and of course narrator Richard Ferrone's voice is perfect for this series. He adds a good amount of creepyness to the killer's movements and actions. I also enjoyed Mr. Sandfort's comments at the end, and how he evolved into this writing style. It definitely kept me listening.

No. 1 in a a Very Readable Series

The first of many police procedurals by author John Sanford featuring detective Lucas Davenport, a game-inventing, womanizing police detective who drives around Minneapolis in a Porsche, has a best friend who's a nun, isn't afraid to bend the rules to catch the perp, and does so with savvy and smartness.

The case that introduces us to Lucas is pretty sordid: "Mad Dog" (actually a very twisted attorney) kills women he selects at random by using a very systematic approach of torture before killing. As the author offers very specific details of the man's methods, it is rather uncomfortable to read (whether the reader is a man or woman).

But when Lucas comes onto the case and we see him working methodically to uncover the murderer, the book begins to zoom.

I wasn't particularly bowled over by the narrator's voice, which is a bit high-pitched and isn't how I imagine a tough detective to sound. He's clear, though, and reads the book well.

I'll be checking out other Lucas Davenport adventures.
