Publisher's summary

The "maddog" murderer who is terrorizing the Twin Cities is two things: insane and extremely intelligent. He kills for the pleasure of it and thoroughly enjoys placing elaborate obstacles to keep police befuddled. Each clever move he makes is another point of pride. But when the brilliant Lieutenant Lucas Davenport, a dedicated cop and a serial killer's worst nightmare, is brought in to take up the investigation, the maddog suddenly has an adversary worthy of his genius.

Awesome!!!!

Decided to start from the beginning since I’ve been a fan of John Sanford for years- but have missed a few over the years since I used to actually read the books lol.

Spoiler!!!!

This book is amazing- just a little FYI though- it’s pretty graphic in the beginning talking about the budding serial killer do things to small animals— I got through it but it’s pretty rough— (if you’re an animal lover). Still fantastic story and well worth it!

"Bad Dog" is Mad Dog Attorney!

Second time through Lucas Davenport stories, obviously I like them a lot. Recommend following in series sequence, although not a strict requirement. I could probably listen to Richard Ferrone counting to 100 and like it. Even so, I am surprised I like Lucas and over look his two timing womanizing ways, and his violence. The credit goes to John Sandford's talent in convincing me to care about Lucas. In addition, Mr. Standord's descriptive ability to thread language together is musical to my listening ears. I can't wait for the next tale!

The Start of a thrill ride!

The first book in the Lucas Davenport series!
John Sandford makes it all work from this book on. He builds his stories with detail, comedy and of course murder. While Richard Ferrone's performance in bringing his characters to life is amazing! He does this through out all of the 20 novels in front of you. Richard Ferrone is Lucas Davenport! If you haven't read or listened to any of the Prey series yet, start here and get hooked!

NYPD BLUES MEETS LAW AND ORDER SVU

Good crime story. However not for the sensitive and politically correct. This book is of its time with racist, sexist and homophobic comments.

Great new thriller

I will continue with the series. While the character is not very realistic for a cop, he's like able and I want to see what lies ahead!

Davenport -- The Beginning

Would you consider the audio edition of Rules of Prey to be better than the print version?

I don't have much time to sit and read. I just put my phone in my pocket, connect my ear buds, and do my housework, my gardening or my crafts. My work goes by quickly and before I know it, I've completed a project. Occasionally I realize that I have stopped working and am just sitting and listening -- but that is usually during the really scarey parts.

Which character – as performed by Richard Ferrone – was your favorite?

Mr. Ferrone does Davenport perfectly. He also reads the killer exceptionally well.

Any additional comments?

This one will get you hooked on Davenport. That tall, rich, smart, womanizing stud who loves being a cop.

Gripping Story

First book in what I believe will be an execlent series. Davenport is almost impossible not to love. Hero cop who plays the by by his own rules. mix between a s by a Police procedural and a thriller
