But when a ghost from his past, a man he has no recollection of, attempts to frame him for a series of murders, he must rely on the help of his wife, Hester, and his close friend, Oliver Rathbone, in order to free himself - from both the charges and the demons that have haunted him since the accident.

...........you know it's Anne Perry - no one like her. I am a little teary to sense that this series may be winding down. It has been artfully managed and paced. Books 7-9 were the low point for me, but before and since each adventure has been a great ride. Thanks to Ms. Perry for Esther, William, Oliver, and all the other wonderful characters she's created.

    "Engaging"

It is hard to believe but this is the 22nd book in the Monk series. William Monk is Commander of the Thames River Police. Years ago, when Monk was a London police detective, he was in a carriage accident and developed total amnesia. Custom Officer McNab has a grudge against Monk but he cannot remember why. Two prisoners escape from Customs, one is killed and the other gets away. The officer pursing him drowns while fighting with Monk in the River. McNab claims Monk killed him deliberately. Monk must find out why he is being framed before he ends up hung.

The story is well written and the history and customs of the 1860s is meticulously researched. The character development of the key people, Monk, Hester and Attorney Oliver Rathbone, continues in each book. The courtroom scene is true to the period and most exciting. The suspense builds throughout the story. Perry’s descriptions of life in London and on the Thames, brings the 1860s to life. Hester is my favorite character but she only has a minor role in this book. Perry is a master story teller and also of historical fiction of the Victorian age. I cannot wait for the next book to be released.

David Colacci does an excellent job narrating the book. Colacci has narrated many of the books in the series. Colacci is an actor, director and multi-award winning audiobook narrator.

    "Excellent Book"

The story is rich in characterization and for followers of the Monk series, it is satisfying to see the maturation of the main characters as they move to happier, stable places in their lives.

    "Not one of the best"
Would you try another book from Anne Perry and/or David Colacci?

    Any additional comments?

Disappointing effort by Anne Perry. Book is over long, especially for those who have read all the other books in the Hester and William Monk series. Poor plotting and over-reliance on internal monologues.

    Reading performance very, very good.

Not A.P.'s best. Could have been much, much shorter. Story went on and on. Fine in the end but it took a long time getting there.

"Good But Not the Best Monk"

I enjoy Perry's Monk books and I enjoyed this one. However, it lacked the enthralling drama of most of the others. Still worth the listening...

Sorry It took me a long time to get into the plot and found it hard going. I have read other books by Anne Perry and felt the same dark brooding and long drawn out plots, which took me forever to read. The reader suited the story and that did nothing to improve the dark feeling in the storyline. I will not be purchasing any more if Anne Perry books.

    "Tiresome Tedious and Not Entertaining"
Would you try another book from Anne Perry and/or David Colacci?

Not sure. David Colacci is great, Anne Perry has become increasingly tiresome as a writer..

What do you think your next listen will be?

    A biography.

Have you listened to any of David Colacci’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Disappointment.

    Any additional comments?

I am an Anne Perry fan but this one is just downright boring, tedious and hard to follow. Her style of writing is distinct and I am usually okay with it but this time I found it awful. The story line produced a big "HUH" in me - so long and that's it? Totally illogical, way way out there and hardly plausible even in her fantasy world. Also she along with other authors really need to easy up on these out of the world beautiful women - her descriptions are always the same (slender, beautiful, etc). Why so much emphasis on a woman's looks? Maybe that is all there is to say about aristocratic women because their personalities are as flat and dry as toast according to Anne Perry. I was bored with this book but will not return it; case in point: level of boredom was such that I listened to it as background noise when I was cleaning the house.
