Publisher's summary

In the early 1980s, long before he was President or head of the CIA, even before a submarine named Red October crossed the Atlantic, Jack Ryan was an historian, teacher, and recent ex-Marine temporarily living in England. A series of deadly encounters with an IRA splinter group had brought him to the attention of the CIA's Deputy Director, Vice Admiral James Greer - and when Greer asked him to come aboard Jack was quick to accept. The opportunity was irresistible.

Then Jack forgot about the rest of his work, because on his first day, an extraordinary document crossed his desk. The new Pope had just delivered a private ultimatum to Warsaw: If the government persisted in its repression, he would feel compelled to resign the papacy and return to Poland.

That was going to have consequences.

In Moscow, another man was contemplating those very same consequences. Yuri Andropov, the chairman of the KGB, did not like what this meant for him or for his nation. All it took was one man to cause everything he had worked for to crumble...and all it took was one man to stop him. The Pope was very powerful - but he was also mortal.

And so it begins, an almost unthinkable plot - a plan to bring down not just leaders, but nations. Ryan will find himself in the middle of a chain reaction, a high-stakes game meant to shake the world...and in which a novice CIA analyst might just be out of his depth.

First Clancy Book for Me

This book has good moments and an interesting story, but it's not a thriller.

Overall, I am a satisfied customer. The book progresses like clockwork but it did not give me the thrill of a Hurwitz book.Orphan X does not have the same great story like Red Rabbit, but gives you a crazy and thrilling story to follow.

Don't know if I can finish this.

I read a lot of reviews before my own because I thought I would see a bunch more about the narrator. Maybe everyone likes their own style, but I can't understand how anybody can think Scott Brick is a good fit for this novel. In my opinion he reads as if he's reading Harry Potter to a class of 2nd graders. Huge inflections where none is needed, often so the entire meaning of the dialogue is missed. Happy high energy tones for a KGB agent planning evil things. Loud, drawn out yelling when the literal text follows...."said tersely". Very strange how many good reviews for him I've seen. Think I'll just read this one instead.

Clancy does it again

I enjoy Tom Clancy's books. I do wish he would keep them in order, so as not to listen to a book now. then listen to another one that is taling about years earlier. I like to keep timelines up to date so can listen to books in order. Tom does end to drag his books out some, but well worth the extra time. I especially enjoyed the defector..the rabbit, and Jack Ryan at it again, but would like to know before hand which time period they are so can keep them in order. I last listed to John Kelly becone John Clarke, so gets a bit confusing.

Scott Brick is great, BUT . . .

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

He is a great Jack Ryan, but his upper-class English accent is wholly unrealistic.

Any additional comments?

Scott Brick has a terrible habit of dropping aitches, particularly with the verb "to have."

Excellent Performance

A little slow for a Clancy story but excellent insight into the How of the game.

Scott Brick is perfect for Tom Clancy's books!

Amazing story. Takes a bit to develop the character back stories but worth every minute for the kind of ending that only Clancy can deliver. Scott Brick is an amazing narrator with great accents. Is it weird that I always picture Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan?

Too Boring

I love Tom Clancy books but I just could not get through this one. I’ve tried and two separate occasions and the farthest I’ve gotten was about 3/4ths of the way. A book needs to either be exciting or have an interesting plot. This one seemed to just drone on with irrelevant information. Almost like the author was using filler scenarios, but for the whole book. If you loved Hunt For The Red October and Patriot Games, this book is nothing like those.

Hard to follow.

I am a Tom Clancy fan. This book was interesting, but it was hard to follow because there are so many names and characters to keep track of. Also, the names are Russian Bulgarian and other ethnicities, Which added to the confusion.
