Shetland detective Jimmy Perez is called in by her grandson - his own colleague, Sandy Wilson. Mima Wilson was a recluse. She had her land, her pride and her family. As Jimmy looks to the islanders for answers, he finds instead two families whose feud has lasted generations. Surrounded by people he doesn't know, Jimmy finds himself out of his depth.
Then there's another death and Jimmy must dig up old secrets to stop a new killer from striking again...

I have only just discovered Ann Cleeves and am enjoying her books immensely. The storyline sucks you in nicely and I was sorry to come to the end of the book because I felt like I belonged with the characters
A long time reader and listener - I just can't get enough of Audible! (Especially mysteries and Buddhist texts and history and ...etc!
I really enjoyed this story - I've read or listened to all of Ann Cleeves' Vera Stonhope mysteries, and loved every one. This was my first Jimmy Perez mystery, and I found it as well written, and well told, but softer somehow. Softer, by the way, is good.
I was really in the mood for something nice. While this isn't really a cozy mystery, it has excellent characterization, sees Perez's young deputy grow up a bit, and really does a good job of portraying the folks in an island village.
Oh - also a good little mystery!
Like Cynthia Harrod-Eagles, Ann Cleeves is not publicised enough in North America. She has a wonderful sense of place, especially in The Shetland Quartet, and her writing is excellent. She creates wonderful characters and plots. I would like to see many more of her books available on Audible.com. The narrator of this series isn't my favourite and doesn't give a Scottish flavour to the dialogue, but is adequate and has a British accent. The quality of her books deserves the best narrators but shows through any flaws in that area.
"A simple start to mayhem!"
I will be listening to the story again. We were kept guessing right up until the final moments to see who was the culprit!
The scenery, vividly painted, of the places where the action took place.
The range of interesting characters together with their motives and prejudges.
The reader, Gordon Griffin adds colour and humour to every character with effortless ease.
He keeps it going at a comfortable pace and switches between them without missing a beat
be very careful aboout what you wish for!
We are now looking at more of the Shetland series for more vicarious experiences on that island group.
"Another superb Ann Cleeves book"
A great read
A well narrated book.
There were many moments that moved me in this book but particularly the ending.
Ann Cleeves makes me want to visit all the places her books are set in.
"Another lovely Shetland story"
A bit far fetched but you still fall in love with the Islands and want to meet Jimmy Perez and marry him. Enjoyed it.
Nice descriptions of Shetland landscapes and way of life as background to interesting plot and characters. It was well read too.
"a good story better on TV"
I enjoyed the SHETLAND series on BBC and remember this particular story. Also I have just been to Shetland working for 9 days.
I knew the locations in the story and found it hard to recognise the place in the telling. The story fits the Shetland I found and I completely relate to the Whalsay community described, but I found the style of writing was naive and didactic, and was ruined by the narration. It felt to me as if there had been little if any research into the dialect and accents of the Whalsay folk let alone the Shetlanders.
Much as I enjoy the stories I am not sure I can take any more of this series. I think I will have to revert to kindle or hard copy. If I still do not like the writing style I will revert to waiting for the BBC.
I'd high hopes for this as I've read Ann Cleeves before but this book just didn't hit the mark. The narrator has some good voices but I felt his reading was not fluid always.
The storyline was dull and long-winded.
I enjoyed this story, lots of intrigue a lovely setting and characters that I cared about.
