Story
The Sound and the Fury is the tragedy of the Compson family, featuring some of the most memorable characters in literature: beautiful, rebellious Caddy; the manchild Benjy; haunted, neurotic Quentin; Jason, the brutal cynic; and Dilsey, their black servant. Their lives fragmented and harrowed by history and legacy, the character’s voices and actions mesh to create what is arguably Faulkner’s masterpiece and one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century.

Story
Evelyn Waugh's most celebrated work is a memory drama about the intense entanglement of the narrator, Charles Ryder, with a great Anglo-Catholic family. Written during World War II, the story mourns the passing of the aristocratic world Waugh knew in his youth and vividly recalls the sensuous pleasures denied him by wartime austerities; in so doing it also provides a profound study of the conflict between the demands of religion and the desires of the flesh.

Story
This final play from the pen of Oscar Wilde is a stylish send-up of Victorian courtship and manners, complete with assumed names, mistaken lovers, and a lost handbag. Jack and Algernon are best friends, both wooing ladies who think their names are Ernest, "that name which inspires absolute confidence". Wilde's effervescent wit, scathing social satire, and high farce make this one of the most cherished plays in the English language.

Story
When it comes to climate change, the media, politicians, and other prominent voices have declared that "the science is settled." In reality, the long game of telephone from research to reports to the popular media is corrupted by misunderstanding and misinformation. Core questions - about the way the climate is responding to our influence, and what the impacts will be - remain largely unanswered. The climate is changing, but the why and how aren't as clear as you've probably been led to believe.

The messages waiting for Henry Pierce when he plugs in his new phone clearly aren't intended for him. They indicate something has gone terribly wrong for a woman named Lilly. Pierce probes, investigates, and then tumbles through a hole, leaving behind a life driven by work to track down and help a woman he's never met. Connelly's latest is "a grabber from the beginning...utterly compelling."

Story
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

Story
My husband and I are fighting for our lives in hospital after a terrible car accident. But despite my pain, all I can think about is what our families will find behind our front door. The scarf that has been all over the news, belonging to a dead young woman with honey-coloured hair. I have to speak to the police before my husband can. I’m drifting in and out of consciousness, but when I hear my wife talking to the police, accusing me of the murder of an innocent woman, a cold fear grips me. I know I’ve got a temper.

Story
When the call came it seemed like the answer to my prayers. My career as a voice actor had been over for months and me and my little girl Scarlet were living back at my mum’s place. I felt like a failure professionally—and with Scarlet having problems at school, as a parent as well. So, when I was asked to narrate a new book by disappeared novelist Philippa Roberts I jumped at the chance, even if it meant leaving Scarlet with my ex, Hugo, for a few weeks. Hugo, with his perfect new home and his perfect new girlfriend Saskia. But this isn’t a dream come true. It’s a nightmare.

When Sam Spade gets drawn into the Maltese Falcon case, we know what to expect: straight talk, hard questions, no favors, and no way for anyone to get underneath the protective shell he wears like a second skin. We know that his late partner, Miles Archer, was a son of a bitch; that Spade is sleeping with Archer's wife, Iva; that his tomboyish secretary, Effie Perine, is the only innocent in his life. What we don't know is how Spade became who he is. Spade & Archer completes the picture.

WARNING: NOT THE COMPLETE NOVEL
This is a dramatization of the novel. They take the major parts and turned it into a sort of hour and a half soap opera. It's good acting and it captures the main plot points, but if you're looking for the entire novel The Big Sleep, this is not it. The full novel version is six hours long, narrated by Elliot Gould, and Audible doesn't carry it yet.

like old time radio
THERE ARE A SERIES OF THESE DRAMATISED ADAPTATIONS OF CHANDLER'S BEST KNOWN WORKS, AND THIS - LIKE THE REST - IS A DELIGHTFUL LISTEN. IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THESE ARE DRAMATISATIONS OF THE SOURCE MATERIAL, WITH A FULL CAST PERFORMING VARIOUS ROLES THROUGHOUT THE PRODUCTION. LIKE LISTENING TO AN OLD TIME RADIO PRODUCTION, ONLY BETTER, BECAUSE THIS PRODUCTION NEVER LOSES THE ATMOSPHERE OF CHANDLER'S PROSE. BRAVO!

The Big Sleep Refers to Death--Now I Know
I bought this by accident thinking it was the novel. I thought—oh well, and listened to it anyway. It was a pleasant surprise—not bad at all. Characters are well demarcated and the actors charge their roles with vigor. (Let's face it, Chandler's dramatis personae are written as over-the-top.) It's uncensored old-time radio. The politically incorrect words are left in. The price is cheap so it's worth the dough. Ignore the naysayers who howl at the moon over what was left out from the book. Listen and enjoy.

this is a superficial dramatization of the plot. plots were his only weak suit. it leaves out every spark of his brilliance
missing is The word play, the poetry, the rhythm, the social commentary, and oh yeah, entire city of Los Angeles. his coulf be s grocers convention in Kansas. do yourself a favor stick with the more expensive brillisntly rendered full text versions.

Too short to be good. Two actors annoyed me.
It’s a short story so plot and characters are not developed as well as I’m used to. Philip goes around asking many people questions. It was hard to keep track of the many characters. He solves two mysteries. In the end when I learned who killed someone, the motive was not clear to me. Also, I realized I did not know some of the other plot points and motives. Apparently my mind wandered at the wrong times. This audiobook was harder to follow than other audiobooks. I’m not sure why. It’s probably better if one reads it instead of listens to it.
This audiobook is the Dramatised version with many actors. Two actors annoyed me. Carmen is talking to Philip. In the text there is one statement that she giggled. But in the audiobook, the actress is giggling throughout the entire conversation. It felt forced and annoyed me. I think Carmen was giggling in every scene she was in, and I doubt the word giggle was written next to every line in the book. I also did not like the Philip Marlowe actor sniffing. I counted 10 sniffs, but there may have been more. I don’t think the author wrote “sniffs” in the text. These were actor interpretations. I did not like them.
There were two kissing scenes. Those were interesting sounds. I liked them.

Rather clicheed, not my cup of tea
This is a nice performance of a classic noir book, but unfortunately "noir" has been satirized and abused so often it's become a cliche for me. I'm sure it was terrific when it was originally written, but for me the abundance of imitators and satires have done it no favours over the years. I liked it, but it doesn't hold the punch it likely did originally.
