You have never met an (ex) FBI agent like Brigid Quinn

“Keeping secrets, telling lies, they require the same skill. Both become a habit, almost an addiction, that’s hard to break even with the people closest to you, out of the business. For example, they say never trust a woman who tells you her age; if she can’t keep that secret, she can’t keep yours. I’m 59.”

You have never met an (ex) FBI agent like Brigid Quinn Brigid’s career - the disappearance and presumed murder of her young protégée, Jessica. Floyd knows things about that terrible night that were never made public, and offers to lead the cops to Jessica's body in return for a plea bargain. It should finally be the end of a dark chapter in Brigid’s life. Except…the new FBI agent on the case, Laura Coleman, thinks the confession is fake, and Brigid finds she cannot walk away from violence and retribution after all, no matter what the cost.

With a fiercely original and compelling voice, Becky Masterman's Rage Against the Dying marks the heart-stopping debut of a brilliant new thriller writer.

New author with potential for ongoing series - - -

I was browsing the mystery section for a new author to try out, and found this one which is read by one of my favorite narrator's--Judy Kaye. Ms. Kaye has done a lot of work for Audible, and is the voice of Kinsey Milhone from the Sue Grafton alphabet series.

Although normally I like mysteries that have a little more depth, I admit this story definitely held my interest from the start. It is a solid mystery about an ex FBI agent who is pulled back into helping out with the last case she worked on before leaving the agency. It kept me guessing almost until the end.

I would put this in the "light" detective mystery area, similar to novels by John Grisham, or Sue Grafton and Nevada Barr as another reviewer mentioned. These novels are good, while not being overwhelming with graphic violence/ language/ sex, etc. I listen to these type of books while doing housework, gardening or painting.

I could see this becoming a series, and I would probably listen to the next book if there is one.

Great "who done it" story

Where does Rage Against the Dying rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book falls into a genre I do not normally read. Yet it was suspenseful, thoughtful inner voice part, added to a crime story.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Main character Brigid Quinn is the story. Her vulnerabilities, strong determination, and quirky aloofness adds much to the story.

What about Judy Kaye’s performance did you like?

Great voice and inflection.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The end had a lovely reunion of the two main characters giving a real flavor of human character.

Fantastic female protagonist! Great voice artist!!

Brigid is a retired FBI agent with great instincts and plenty of moxie. I can’t wait for more books about her. For some reason, I tend to prefer male voice artists, some women’s voices grate on my ears. I have never heard Judy Kaye before but I will certainly be seeking her out. In this book her voice is rich, with a touch of what a I took to be Texas in it. Judy has a wide range of acting skills. I thoroughly enjoyed her work If you like books where a “woman of a certain age” is still powerful, passionate and effective, not consigned to the sidelines has f life, I recommend this book.

Very entertaining

The story is interesting, the characters are well rounded, and the dialogue snappy. What more could you possibly want?

Stellar job by Judy Kaye, pretty god story

Judy Kaye’s voice and the character Kinsey Millhone in Sue Grafton’s marvelous alphabet series was one of the best matches in audio history. I was surprised to hear Kaye on this 2013 release. Again, she does a superb job with the quirky Brigid Quinn in this entertaining story. I am 99% bored with books centered on catching a serial killer so I am glad I took a chance on this one. Surprised to see that books 2 and 3 in this series were narrated by others. I hope Kaye continues her book recordings.

Decent read

Gets off to a good start, middles a little slow. Like the ending. I think I can rated higher if there was a little bit tighter.

Loved it...

The story line was good ...the reader beyond excellent. I only have one negative for the life of me I just don't understand why they have to use G D...they would never say damn Buda or damn Allan so why use my Gods name ?

Awesome FBI mystery

Great story with a 50+ retired female retired FBI agent as the not so perfect hero of the story. A real solid page turner. Enjoy!

Brigid - the new Angie Dickinson

Awesome older, female lead.
I listen to plenty of erotica and romance, but it was still so great to listen to a story primarily about middle-age or older folk. And these folk were more than capable mentally, emotionally & physically. An additional plus is that there were no millionaires & billionaires in the story easily effecting the tale and tapping into listeners'/readers' preference for all things rich. I also enjoyed getting brief glimpses of the early days of a marriage of an older couple.
The book flowed, made sense, didn't use coincidence and manufactured conflict to move the story. Plus, there were no super heroics. And I didn't know who the culprit was until Bridgett was figuring it out.
I didn't like an instance of gun-love, even though it was done by a retired female FBI agent. And I hated, hated the author referring to undocumented immigrants as "Mexican alien" and "illegals."

Great story. Loved it.

Language is terrible, but the story is great. I loved it. Prologue almost made me put it down, but Chapter one made me glad I stuck it out.
