Publisher's summary

As a former Navy SEAL turned cop, Joe Quinn has seen the face of evil and knows just how deadly it can be. When he first met Eve Duncan, he never expected to fall in love with a woman whose life would be defined by her dual desires to bring home her missing daughter and discover the truth behind her disappearance - no matter how devastating. With the help of CIA agent Catherine Ling, they make a shocking discovery that sheds new light on young Bonnie’s abduction and puts Quinn squarely in the crosshairs of danger. Eve’s first love, John Gallo, a soldier supposedly killed in the line of duty, is very much alive - and very much a threat.

Emotionally charged, with one shock after another, Quinn reveals the electricity of Joe and Eve’s first connection, and how they fell in love in the midst of haunting tragedy. As their search takes them deeper and deeper into a web of murder and madness, Joe and Eve must confront their most primal fears... and test their resolve to uncover the ultimate bone-chilling truth.

Quinn

I had to stop listening within the first couple chapters. I should have remembered how dramatic this narrator was in previous Johansen's books. I swear she makes stopping at the store sound melodramatic. As far as the story line goes, it's the same old thing. Maybe we could finally find out what really happened and get it over with rather than drag it on from novel to novel?

that's no ending

I enjoyed the story, was captivated, until the ending, which left too many loose ends. I like a story that leaves the ending to one's imagination, but this was ridiculous.

Disjointed

I though I had messed up the download when, in the second part, there began to be references to characters and situations never referred to previously. Perhaps I just jumped into a series in the middle, but if not, this was the most poorly edited book to which I have ever listened.

And where were the "forensics"?

The reader was superb. That was my first experience at listening to a woman read all the parts, including the male parts and do it so convincingly.

When the book ended, all I could think was"What the devil was that?"

Okay, was my brain on vacation?

I cannot believe the number of stars given by the raters of this piece. I am a Johansen fan, but had to do this review after I listened and went back to see what others thought. I agree with the other one star reviewers and say ENOUGH ALREADY to the plot and execution of this read.

Narration is sooo bad!

I love these characters, and I've read most of this series, but this narrators is chasing me away! I don't believe its been the same reader from the start, or she is just changing her style. But the last book and this one have been hard to get through! I hope someone listens and makes a change.

Scattered plot, poor narration

Tough to listen to this one. The narrator has an irritating accent and makes every character sound alike. Difficult to follow the plot, and not very believeable dialog. Don't waste your time.

Horrible

This may be the only book from Iris Johansen that I've had such a difficult time getting thru. I hated the romance between both couples...Joe and Eve who should have had a nice, comfortable, SOLID relationship by now and Katherine and Joe who seemed to be second best in the Eve world and the "heat" that came quickly between the two and without real reason, just wasn't believable.

Speaking of believable...obviously Iris has never had a disadvantage upbringing or been around people who has; otherwise she would have known that no matter how educated a person becomes, when they are upset or speak of their childhood, they lapse into a broken, slang filled english. Neither Eve nor Katherine comes across as anything but elegantly raised women from a nice suburb.

I really liked Katherine and John. The latter has come across sexier than love sap Joe; for them to have the hots for each other was such a disappointment. How much better if their relationship had slowly with sexual attraction at first ignored, confusing for the little tingling totally unknown to each other, and then blowing their minds when it finally happens.

Joe seemed to be an after thought from the beginning and remains so now, even after a book named after him.

I finally like Joe

In this book I can now see how the man has become the way he was. In previous books I thought he wanted to control Eve. The man is much more then that. Loved the book and can hardly wait for Bonnie.

Nope!!

Horrible narration!! The story sounds good, but the narration was so bad. I’ll just have to read it myself. I could not finish. I want my credit back!
