Editorial reviews

Editors Select, August 2014 - Usually when I choose a book as my Editors Select pick, I read it in advance of the audio being completed so that I am confident in my recommendation. Not so with this month’s book. Rhys Bowen and Katherine Kellgren team up again for the next installment of my all-time favorite series, and – truly – audio is the best way to experience it. I have no doubt that this book will be as wonderful as its predecessors. I’ll say it again: if you haven’t listened to the Her Royal Spyness series, do so immediately. Utterly charming and totally un-put-down-able, you’ll join me in counting down the days to each book’s new release. Emily, Audible Editor

Publisher's summary

Lady Georgiana Rannoch, 35th in line for the British throne, knows how to play the part of an almost royal - but now she's off to Hollywood, where she must reprise her role as sleuth or risk starring in an all-too-convincing death scene...

My mother, the glamorous and much-married actress, is hearing wedding bells once again - which is why she must hop across the pond for a quickie divorce in Reno. To offer my moral support, and since all expenses are paid by her new hubby-to-be, Max, I agree to make the voyage with her.

Crossing the Atlantic, with adventure in the air and wealthy men aboard, Mother all but forgets about Max and matrimony - especially when movie mogul Cy Goldman insists on casting her in his next picture.

Meanwhile, I find myself caught up in the secret investigation of a suspected jewel thief. Lucky for me, the lead investigator happens to be my dashing beau, Darcy!

Mother's movie and Darcy's larceny lead everyone to Cy's Hollywood home, where the likes of Charlie Chaplin are hanging about and there’s enough romantic intrigue to fill a double feature. But we hardly get a chance to work out the sleeping arrangements before Cy turns up dead - as if there wasn’t enough drama already.

Rhys hits a speed bump.

I Love , Love Love this series but this one is the first one that I actually forgot what it was about shortly after reading, sign of a boring book for me. I appreciated the usual characters showing up to save the day here and there, but I think it was just that moving the story across the pond just kind of spoiled the magic for me. Please keep it in jolly old England and keep me loving these stories.
As Always, Katherine Kellgren is outstanding!

Spunky protagonoist.

Queen of Hearts is a category of its own.

What about Katherine Kellgren’s performance did you like?

She seems to generate joy in her assumption of Georgie's personality.

Love this series!

What made the experience of listening to Queen of Hearts the most enjoyable?

Wonderful characters, great creation of the 1930s environment. Reminds me of my grandparents era and the stories they used to tell of their life.

What other book might you compare Queen of Hearts to and why?

Agatha Christie's Hercule Poiret but funnier. I always love the twist of humor.

What does Katherine Kellgren bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Once you get to know the characters, it is important to keep the consistency of voice between the other books in the series.

Yay! More Darcy and less Queenie

I thought this latest installment to the Royal Spyness series was great fun. The heyday of Hollywood, lots of Darcy and the continued outstanding narration by Katherine Kellgren make this another great addition in my opinion. It's a light, humorous series that charms me.

Not quite royal

I enjoy this series about Lady Georgiana Rannoch, 35th in line for the British throne and Cousin to the queen. The characters are quite funny and consistently there is a murder which Lady Georgiana must figure out. This isn't a "heavy duty" thriller. Rather, it's light, funny and overall very entertaining. If you are thinking of downloading this book, start with the first one in the series and listen to all of them!

Predicable but fun.

Where does Queen of Hearts rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

About half way up. Like the comedy vs excitement.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Queen of Hearts?

Not finished yet.

Which scene was your favorite?

When Queenie quit. Not expected. Socially elite vs American freedom.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Winston Churchill's "Two countries separated by a common language".

Any additional comments?

Not sure why Darcy plays such a significant roll in this one. "My Lady" seems to do OK on her own. Also, I've never been so impressed by a narrator in my life. Kellgren is phenomonal. For some reason, I find this series captivating. Rhys Bowen better get a move on writing the next in the series.

terrible accents

The cockney & Irish accents were fine, but the Hispanics sounded like tgey came from Transylvania.

Queenie needs to go

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The author should write Queenie out, she is obnoxious. At first I didn't mind her but there is just no way someone that incompetent would be tolerated. The narrator is great but her voice for queenie is just as obnoxious as the character.

Would you be willing to try another book from Rhys Bowen? Why or why not?

Yes, overall this is a good, fun series and I've invested this much time I might as well see it through. Unless she keeps Queenie for a lot more books

Enjoyable

I enjoy the books in this series but I weary over all the homosexual references.
