Publisher's summary

She was a "Jane Doe," an unidentified white female whose decomposed body was discovered near a quarry off California's Highway 1. The case fell to the Santa Teresa County Sheriff's Department, but the detectives had little to go on. The woman was young, her hands were bound with a length of wire, there were multiple stab wounds, and her throat had been slashed. After months of investigation, the case remained unsolved.

That was 18 years ago. Now, the two men who found the body, both nearing the end of long careers in law enforcement, want one last shot at the case. Old and ill, they need someone to do the legwork for them, and they turn to Kinsey Millhone. They will, they tell her, find closure if they can just identify the victim. Kinsey is intrigued by the challenge and agrees to work with them.

But revisiting the past can be a dangerous business, and what begins with the pursuit of Jane Doe's real identity ends in a high-risk hunt for her killer.

Critic reviews

"An intriguing plot, fully drawn characters, and wry humor prove why Grafton's series is one of the best." (Library Journal)

One of Sue’s best and Judy Kaye is awesome

Make sure to listen to the authors note at the end - based on a Jane doe from 1969

Great story!

I found this to be one of Sue Grafton’s most riveting books!
While there are quite a few characters that confused me a bit I loved the interactions between the two old detectives and Kinsey. As usual Judy Kaye is an amazing reader!!

Great Book

Like so many fans of Sue Grafton ' s Kinsey Milhone series this book was really great. I especially enjoyed learning that this book is fiction. Is based on a girl whom is a Jane Doe in real life. I hope eventually the case will come to a close.

unabridged

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This is my first time seeing the unabridged book by narrator Judy Kaye. It was great! I may have to go back and get the unabridged A-P with Judy Kaye. This series keeps offering new ways to hear these books.

And the

This story is as good as the other Grafton ALPHABET series. The narrator does an excellent job of telling the story. It would be great if Auidble could incorporate ALL of the series that have been in print, but we can only hope that the remainder of the series will come when they reach the printed medium.

Puzzling story

The two old detectives added interest. I wonder if our private detective got paid and how much and by whom. A small town does keep secrets forever.
