Publisher's summary

When rookie lawyer Jessica Ford gets the call from her boss, John Davenport, the senior partner at the illustrious law firm for which she works, she can tell he is well on his way to being drunk. He needs Jess to meet First Lady Annette Cooper, for whom Davenport is a personal lawyer, at a Washington, D.C., hotel. Jess is thrilled: this high-profile assignment must mean that she's earned her boss's trust and she's on her way to bigger things. But unfortunately, bigger isn't always better.

Jess doesn't remember much - only that in the course of the late-night meeting with Annette Cooper, she ended up in the backseat of a car, speeding off into the darkness. All Jess knows is that the car crashed en route, and the other three passengers were killed, including the First Lady. Badly injured, Jess is the only survivor of what is trumpeted around the world as a tragic accident.

Although she has no memory about the events leading up to the accident, Jess is still bothered by one question: Was it really an accident? The Secret Service agent on the case, Mark Ryan, gets the feeling that Jess is hiding something. As his suspicions grow, Jess's world starts falling apart. First, she is brutally attacked in the hospital, barely escaping with her life. Then her boss dies under questionable circumstances. In fact, everyone who might possibly know the details about the First Lady's last few hours starts turning up dead. And then Jess understands: If she remembers that night, she'll be dead too.

Terrified and certain that the First Lady's death was no accident, Jess has only Mark Ryan to turn to.

Good book -- Horrible narrator

The narrator almost ruined an otherwise good book. Exciting story despite narration. If you can overlook the voice and intonation of the narrator, you will probably enjoy this audio book. In the future I will avoid this narrator.

pursuit

Great book! Lots of political intrigue, conspiracy & sexual tension. It easily rates 5 stars except for the reader who unfortunately has a high pitched (think nails on a blackboard) voice w/o depth. I eventually got used to the reader but will avoid books read by her in the future. Karen Robards has followed her last book "Obsession" w/ another winner.

I would NOT pursue this if I were you

Save your money. This could have been a fair book if it were narated by someone else, anyone else, a good book if it was edited by someone else, anyone else, and a great book if written by someone else; Lee Child, Stewart Woods etc. It had a plot that kept me listening. However, I just got bored with the author and naration.

Pursuit

This is my first Karen Robards audiobook and I do like it. However, it is very hard to get through because of the annoying narrator. Will never get a book narrated by this reader again. This is one book it might be worth reading instead of listening to it. Good story - Terrible narrator!

good plot but...

I am continuing to stuggle listening to this book because the plot is rather intriguing but the dialogue is really too much in the Danielle Steele variety, inane chatter. The woman is an attorney but the dialogue makes her sound like a dolt.
Also I am finding the reader very difficult to understand, not a nice voice to listen to either.

Disappointing

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

the main girl is really annoying. constantly asking dumb questions and seems naïve and slow.

Would you ever listen to anything by Karen Robards again?

yes. I usually like her stuff.

Would you be willing to try another one of Franette Liebow’s performances?

no. seriously annoying voices. WHY does she purposely pitch her voice all high and wobbly?? when she's just narrating it's ok, but all her "voices" are horrible!

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

it had potential, but there were too many loooooong boring slow places where the story seemed to take forever to progress. and just too many of those situations where you're rolling your eyes at the obviously dumb choices of the characters.

Narration is terrible

The narration is so poor that I could not listen after chapter 3. I tried, I really did, but to no avail. I'm going to have to read this on my nook or kindle.

Narrator kills the story

What did you like best about Pursuit? What did you like least?

I hardly ever write reviews but I felt like I had to warn future purchasers about the narrator. It just goes to show that not everyone is cut out to narrate audiobooks - especially when you need to have different voices for different characters. I purchase a ton of audiobooks and this was by the worst narration I've come across. It's a decent story but the narration just wrecks it. Buy the written book instead.

Would you be willing to try another book from Karen Robards? Why or why not?

Maybe - if she had a different narrator

What didn’t you like about Franette Liebow’s performance?

Horribly voices of characters. Ms. Liebow has a pleasant normal speaking voice - she just can't do characters. The women are all squeaky and shrill and the men, in an attempt to sound husky, just sound nasal. Just awful.

Did Pursuit inspire you to do anything?

Never buy a book narrated by Franette Liebow.

Bad narration

What disappointed you about Pursuit?

The narrator fluctuated her voice too much. It would be so quiet that you'd need to turn up the volume just to hear it. Also, the voice she used for Mark Ryan made him sound like a 90 year old hillbilly.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Franette Liebow?

Angela Dawe or Joyce Bean

Any additional comments?

I loved the book... just hated the presentation!

Don't bother.

Story was formulaic. Main character was frustratingly whiny. Narrator and the "director" believe the only way to demonstrate "thinking" or sotto voce comments are to WHISPER. I missed a good 1/4 of the book since neither my car or home stereo speakers will produce enough volume to hear those comments without being destroyed!

Had I been able,, I would have returned the book after 30 minutes.
