Publisher's summary

An action-packed and all-too-realistic vision of nations navigating the minefield of international intrigue, Protect and Defend is Vince Flynn's most explosive political thriller yet. The action begins in the heart of Iran, where billions of dollars are being spent on the development of a nuclear program. No longer willing to wait for the international community to stop its neighboring enemy, Israel launches a creative and daring operation that leaves a radioactive tomb in the middle of Iran's second largest city. An outraged Iranian government publicly blames both Israel and the United States and demands retribution.

Enter Mitch Rapp, America's top counterterrorism operative. Rapp convinces President Josh Alexander to sign off on a risky operation that will push Iran to the brink of revolution. But when Iran recruits Hezbollah master terrorist Imad Mukhtar, and a CIA effort goes disastrously wrong, Rapp and Mukhtar are set on a collision course that threatens to engulf the entire region in war. With the clock ticking, Rapp is given 24 hours, no questions asked, to do whatever it takes to stop Mukhtar, and avert an unthinkable catastrophe.

Critic reviews

"Flynn didn't invent the post-9/11 thriller, but he might as well have....[He] is the best pure adrenaline-charged action writer out there today." ( Providence Journal)

My boy Mitch

This is not great literature. What this is, is 10 or 12 hours of great escapist fiction. No holds barred. If you liked the others in the series you'll like this one too and only regret it's not another 4 hours longer.

The ending is a little too pat but it doesn't detract from the overall story. George Guidall is a most excellent reader and does a great job.

Gimme more Vince.

Read This One BEFORE Israel Bombs Iran!!

This is only my 4th Mitch Rapp book, so I wouldn't consider myself the foremost expert. However, if you're a fan of Mitch, you need to read this bok BEFORE israel decides to end Iran's current nuclear program. The whole story centers around this, and is told in a way that's not only (currently) believable, but also filled with twists and turns. My fear is, after Israel takes out Iran's nuke plants, this book will IMMEDIATELY become dated, which is a shame. The story itself is unique, original, and exciting, but I see no way that it will stay relevant after that.

Politics, Torture, and Twists abound in this one, so be prepared. A lot of people complain about the amount of torturing that Mitch does in some of these, more recent books. I think it's completely in keeping with the character and the impossible situations he's placed in.

Narrator is GREAT, of course.

Best book I've listened to this year

This has to be my favourite of all of the Mitch Rapp series. George Guidall is an incredible reader. If you have not listened to any of the series start on "Consent to Kill" and work your way through them. Truly the best I've come across so far!

Full Blown Thriller

This unabridged version of Vince Flynn's Protect and Defend, is a clear example of the immense difference the unabridged version of an audio novel is from the abridged version. In this novel, the plot is allowed to fully unfold in a way that allows the listener to be fully caught up in the story. The writer's telling of the story doesn't seem rushed and unreal. Rather, the story line is allowed to unfold. Our hero Mitch Rapp and the agency and the government do in this story what we can only hope the government would do in the face of terrorism. You might not approve of his methods, but you also know thoughtful action is being taken. if you like Vince Flynn's other Mitch Rapp novels, you love this one.

best suspense written

As an avid audiobook listeners of the top authors, Patterson, Sanford, Cornwell, I've had plenty of reasons to sit in the driveway to listen when I should be moving on. Until Protect and Defend, I never avoided listening dreading what might come next. The emotional attachment to the characters developed over previous books and the lack of predictability makes Flynn the best of his genre. As a physician I appreciate the detail and insight his "fiction" represents. I pray we are as knowledgeable and successful as his characters.

Protect and Defend

Another excellent Mitch Rapp novel from Mr. Flynn. Highly entertaining, the action never lets up. There are some graphic sequences that are not for the faint of heart. If you a fan of Flynn's other novels, this is a must read.

Mitch Rapp is the Man!

Anyone who enjoys the counter-terrorism story will enjoy every one of Vince Flynn's books. Flynn's protagonist, Mitch Rapp, is Jack Bauer times two. Every time Mitch takes out his trusty silenced pistol and lets the bad guy have it right between the eyes, one's heart swells with satisfaction at the justice of it all. Those of us who would never sanction such behavior in real life, can rejoice at the "40 million dollar federal killing machine" just wiping out the terrorists with a steely eye and steady hand. He's saving the world and we suffer no guilt whatever. The good part is that Flynn lets you know what Rapp is thinking and why he does what he does. You get to know Rapp the man, as well as Rapp the assassin. You'll love these books.

FABULOUS!!

I'm a big Vince Flynn fan and this is easily one of his best books!!

He weaves a great story around great dialogue, great characters and great character development - and a lot of suspense.

I think this was also one of the narrator's (George Guidall) best performances as well.

This is a CAN'T MISS Listen!!!
