Publisher's summary

Amaryllis Coltraine may have recently transferred to the New York City police force from Atlanta, but she's been a cop long enough to know how to defend herself against an assailant. When she's taken down just steps away from her apartment, killed with her own weapon, for Eve the victim isn't just "one of us."

Dallas's friend, Chief Medical Examiner Morris, had started a serious relationship with Coltraine, and from all accounts the two were headed for a happy future together. But someone has put an end to all that. After breaking the news to Morris, Eve starts questioning everyone, including Coltraine's squad, informants, and neighbors, while Eve's husband, Roarke, digs into computer data on the dead woman's life back in Atlanta. To their shock, they discover a connection between this case and their own painful, shadowy pasts.

The truth will need to be uncovered one layer at a time, starting with the box that arrives at Cop Central addressed to Eve, containing Coltraine's guns, badge, and a note from her killer: "You can have them back. Maybe someday soon, I'll be sending yours to somebody else." But Eve Dallas doesn't take too kindly to personal threats, and she is going to break this case, whatever it takes. And that's a promise.

Book 28 of the Best Series Ever!

The 'In Death' series, written by J.D. Robb & narrated by Susan Ericksen, is a futuristic suspense series. The story is set in mid-21st-century New York City & it centers around Lieutenant Eve Dallas & her billionaire husband, Roarke.

My husband & I both love all of the J.D. Robb, 'In Death' series. We first began listening to them when they were on CDs. We've listened to the entire series, in order, three times so far! If we're driving somewhere, you can be sure Eve, Roarke, Peabody, McNab, Capt. Feeney, Mavis, Dr. Mira, Nadine, Summerset & the rest of the gang are in the truck with us. We love all of the major characters & look forward, with anticipation, to the new audiobooks that come out in February & September every year!

If you're looking for an awesome mystery series, a little romance with a bit of the futuristic thrown in, then you'll love this series! Believe me, you just can't go wrong, but be warned... once you get started, you'll be hooked!

Another Winner from JD Robb

What does Susan Ericksen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Ericksen does a superb job of giving every character their own voice and personality. No one does it better.

Any additional comments?

I really think that Robb did a great job of character development in this book. Morris has always been a bit character, but in this novel, he becomes a major focal point and Robb does an excellent job with bringing him to the fore-front.

One of the saddest, but better books

I have read all of the In Death books. I really loved the first one and I really felt this one was as powerful. It is worth the credit.

Another hit for JD Robb and Susan Ericksen

For me, this series is more than the crimes, which are not always as interesting as the interaction among the various permanent characters. This is especially true because of the fantastic narration by Susan Ericksen, she is a genius. In this “episode” of the series, the crime was interesting and not as confusing as others have been, but I especially liked the fact that it is solved in part by Eve Dallas and her female friends. Their give-and-take during Louise’s bridal shower is fantastic. I truly enjoyed listening to this book!

Eve as I’ve never seen her!

I laughed so hard and cried unashamedly. Robb wrote scenes of core characters, some of whom had never been in books together before, interacting so fluidly. The “brainy girls” session was a favorite. This is a top 5 Eve / Roarke story.
