Story
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Great , but a bit much on the bait and switch
This addition to the series advances the story of Harry Hole significantly. It is cleverly plotted and magnificently narrated. However Mr. Nesbo has fallen in love with bait and switch tactics in his writing. By the end of the book most readers will probably no longer take the bait. However it is still a great book!

performance is great, book is trash
laziest writing I've encountered in a while. like Nesbø found out about unreliable narrators but missed some key mechanics about how to do it. unreliable narrators shouldn't lie to themselves. or that an entire church full of people shouldn't conspire to lie about why they're at church for no damn reason.

Good
Unfortunately, I compare books to other books and that's not fair. I enjoyed this book, however, I want more thrill and frankly great books are rare. I'm glad I bought and listened to this and will continue to read and listen to Jo Nesbo.

Possibly his best
Police and The Leopard are Nesbo’s best. I miss Robin Sachs but after getting used to John Lee’s voice I enjoyed quite much.
