Publisher's summary

The hair-raising suspense of The General's Daughter... the wry wit of The Gold Coast... this is vintage Nelson DeMille at the peak of his originality and the height of his powers...

Wounded in the line of duty, NYPD homicide cop John Corey is convalescing in rural eastern Long Island when an attractive young couple he knows is found shot to death on the family patio. The victims were biologists at Plum Island, a research site rumored to be an incubator for germ warfare. Suddenly, a local double murder takes on shattering global implications - and thrusts Corey and two extraordinary women into a dangerous search for the secret of Plum Island....

Critic reviews

“DeMille's Mike Hammer-like cop is a chuckle-provoking winner, and the plot cleverly combines biological hazards and shiver-me-timbers pirate legends. An entertaining mix from the big-selling DeMille.” ( Booklist)
“Heavy wisecracking keeps the fun flowing as DeMille cranks up a thrilling, entertaining plot.” ( Kirkus Reviews)

Takes a long time to be worth it

Many of the other reviews are dead on the money. The protagonist’s horny smartassed misogyny wears out a welcome very fast—this has not aged well at all. Brick’s narration is excellent and the prose is nice, but it takes gritting teeth through the first 2/3 before it settles down and you don’t actively root for John to get his teeth kicked in.

A weird thing happened where by the end I wanted to know what the next book is like—but you should know what you’re getting into.

Witty Thriller

John Corey is a witty homicide detective that does things his way. This is a well written thriller with an interesting main character. The narrator, Scott Brick, takes this story to the next level as he embodies John Corey. I’m looking forward to reading more in this series.

What a great read

My go to genre is cozy mysteries and this book was a curiosity selection. it did not disappoint . lots of dialog. great descriptions of events that helped me feel I was right there with them. protagonist is a straight talker and I believed the characterization portrayed. and he had heart. and the female characters were strong . very engaging!

John Corey is an a$$hole. I love him

Another incredible Scott Brick performance. Almost like he was born to play John Corey. Twists and turns, funny and witty. Great book. Well done, DeMille.

Thanks Nelson for bringing an oldy to AUDIBLE

I have been hooked on Audio books for about 2 years now. I have already listened to ALL the John Corey books. Love them all and the personality. I get so dissapointed when I see there are earlier books in a series that arent available in Audible... Or even worse.. Abridged versions (chills).... 1/4 way into this book I had figured this was my favorite John Corey book to date!. I am about 30 min from the end of the book.

A good FUN story line, Not the same old same old plot... again. I cant believe John Corey was that sarcastic back THEN. Feels like he was more a smart ass then then in Lion's Game. I love thr Humor, the depth of the plot. No boring spots... One of my top 10 Audibles for sure..... and Thanks again for Scott Brick!!

Narrator nails the protagonist's voice

First person narrations work well if they give you a special sense of the character. In this book, John Corey is a wisecracking detective, but he doesn't say everything he's thinking. As readers, though, we get to experience it, and he's hilarious. Narrator Scott Brick perfectly captures the rhythm and nuances of the internal monologues.

It's ok

I listen to crime type novels when Im working out or doing other odious jobs. I love John Sanderford, Tom Woods. I tried this book knowing that Nelson DeMille is a best selling author, And, Scott Brick is a favorite narrator.

This book has a smart ass main character. He claims to be a great detective but I didn't really see anything that showed that. Additionally, Scott's portrayal made him seem a total obnoxious oaf. Scott's reading is that good. I can't say I will read any more books with that character.
