Publisher's summary

The hair-raising suspense of The General's Daughter... the wry wit of The Gold Coast... this is vintage Nelson DeMille at the peak of his originality and the height of his powers...

Wounded in the line of duty, NYPD homicide cop John Corey is convalescing in rural eastern Long Island when an attractive young couple he knows is found shot to death on the family patio. The victims were biologists at Plum Island, a research site rumored to be an incubator for germ warfare. Suddenly, a local double murder takes on shattering global implications - and thrusts Corey and two extraordinary women into a dangerous search for the secret of Plum Island....

Critic reviews

“DeMille's Mike Hammer-like cop is a chuckle-provoking winner, and the plot cleverly combines biological hazards and shiver-me-timbers pirate legends. An entertaining mix from the big-selling DeMille.” ( Booklist)
“Heavy wisecracking keeps the fun flowing as DeMille cranks up a thrilling, entertaining plot.” ( Kirkus Reviews)

Entertaining

Good book. There were parts that were long and drawn out but overall the book was entertaining. I’m book 2 in the series.

This is no Gold Coast

I began reading Nelson DeMille's books with The Gold Coast. Unfortunately, that set the bar high and Plum Island just didn't reach half way to Gold Coast. Often, the narrator can make or break a book, and Christian Rummel nailed it, Scott Brick didn't with his overly dramatic performance, especially at the end with the ever-so-long sinking boat ride in the storm. That should've been about 5 minutes instead an hour. After this, realizing that Scott Brick narrates all other DeMilles, I'm going to take a break.

Passable but not good

Main character is a cliche and not a good one. Author tries to make the main detective as a grumpy hard bitten New Yorker and veteran cop, but he really just comes off as an ass. While this is distracting, it also results in a major plot point, but the author doesn’t even acknowledge it leaving a gaping hole in the story. OK to listen to, but don’t expect to invest much into this book

Second time around

My wife and I read this book probably 10 years ago. As I read the book again this time, I was still baffled and intrigued by the intricate story. Really good! Especially since I’ve spent some time up on the north fork and things were so familiar looking and familiar sounding.

Intriguing story, shorter would be better?

I had hopes that this long book would be a captivating one, and for the most part I felt like it was, but there are parts that were far too drawn out. Once the story wrapped up, it made sense why some things were included but it seemed to take the long way around to get to the point. I felt like I had it figured out by 2/3 of the way through, and sure enough I was right, but it just kept on stumbling over details, one after another. I'm glad that I didn't stop in the first third of the book, as it did get better, but could it be that this one is a story where the abridged version is better than the unabridged is? The performance was good, no complaints there at all, and this one makes me want to go onto the next story... but there were places where I doubted that thought.

still enjoyable

Read the book many years ago and really enjoyed it. It was a favorite and started reading many John Corey stories. Listening to it again, still a favorite and kept me glued to the app.

Enough Already

Story 3.5 stars rounded up. The never-ending quips were a bit much although I did LOL a few times. It’s hard to invest in a MC who’s basically obnoxious.

Good listen but a bit long

The narration was well done (full disclosure: I am a Scott Brick fan). The story tends to wander at times from the main plot line making it longer than it needs to be.
