Publisher's summary

The hair-raising suspense of The General's Daughter... the wry wit of The Gold Coast... this is vintage Nelson DeMille at the peak of his originality and the height of his powers...

Wounded in the line of duty, NYPD homicide cop John Corey is convalescing in rural eastern Long Island when an attractive young couple he knows is found shot to death on the family patio. The victims were biologists at Plum Island, a research site rumored to be an incubator for germ warfare. Suddenly, a local double murder takes on shattering global implications - and thrusts Corey and two extraordinary women into a dangerous search for the secret of Plum Island....

Critic reviews

“DeMille's Mike Hammer-like cop is a chuckle-provoking winner, and the plot cleverly combines biological hazards and shiver-me-timbers pirate legends. An entertaining mix from the big-selling DeMille.” ( Booklist)
“Heavy wisecracking keeps the fun flowing as DeMille cranks up a thrilling, entertaining plot.” ( Kirkus Reviews)

Corny

Can't understand all the great reviews of this book. The narrator sounds like Andrew dice clay. The main character is an endless amount of cheek and gum sarcastic comments that are funny for the first 30 minutes but get very old. He never said anything without done corny comment. The 18 hour book really could have been 12 hours. The story is corny. If you like your murder mysteries to be fairly realistic you will not like this book. If you like to suspend reality then you might like it. Everything the characters do is just ridiculous. I didn't hate the book, it's readable. But I would not call it a good listen

A worthwhile story for listening

This has been one of the better audiobooks I’ve listened to in a while. If you love murder mysteries, Plum Island will hold your attention and keep you listening.

The hurricane climatic boat scene near the end needed more intensity from the the narrator, but it still was a great listen.

Good, rambly listen

First, I loved the story! There were parts that were a bit rambly, but all in all, it kept me from going to bed on time for a few nights.

I want to mention that this is a first person narrative with a lot of internal dialog. There are people who hate 1st person narratives - just warning you!

narration is first rate, characters are great, story's okay, but predictable at times. I will try another in the series.

A thriller from start to finish!

Being from Long Island and living on the North Fork this book really hits home. Scott Brick is one of the best and Nelson Demille is brilliant! No disappointments, get this one.

DeMille & Corey — Plum Fantastic

John Corey begins the pursuit of the bad guys, and keeps you in stitches, ticked or just plain rooting for the good guy every clue along the way. Begin the Corey saga here, Plum Island will hook you on DeMille forever. After listening to this initial Corey tale, I had to find all of Nelson Demille's previous novels. Every DeMille novel is a non-stop great listen or read. It's good to see Audible going back to Demille's earlier works and offering them. His novels are like John Wayne movies, they are great re-reads and listens. Audible 20 Sweepsteaks

Pirates and Paranoia, a good combo

This is a good tale, combining modern day fears of germ warfare with historical insights about Long Island. Likeable enough characters too. A homicide cop from Manhattan recovering from a shooting who gets sucked into the murder of new friends on the north shore of Long Island. Overall a good yarn and one that held my interest.
