Publisher's summary

Theirs was a marriage made in tabloid heaven, but no sooner had supermodel Laura Ayars and Celtics star David Baskin said “I do” than tragedy struck. While honeymooning on Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, David went out for a swim - and never returned.

Now widowed and grieving, Laura has a thousand questions and no answers. Her search for the truth will draw her into a web of lies and deception that stretches back 30 years - while on the court at the Boston Garden, a rookie phenom makes his spectacular debut....

Just when you think you have it figured out

What made the experience of listening to Play Dead the most enjoyable?

Scott Brick as a narrator was awesome. He does all the accents and does a wonderful job of having a voice for each character.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. I had a hard time putting this down. Just when I thought I'd have it figured out there would be another twist that I hadn't considered.

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

The Aussie sheriff.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There was a section at the end when I had a reveal moment that had me gasping and exclaiming what I knew. No laughing or crying - maybe a little head scratching.

Any additional comments?

I know some reviews said this was a horrible read but I didn't feel that way at all. I was very much engaged in the writing and the story development. I liked the characters and the interactions. It was a solid book. Still not one of my favorites but still a good read. It is dated as it takes place early 90's but worth the read.

Family is everything

(As posted in GoodReads.)
Enthralling how several different plots managed to weave into one congruent story! And the story kept you guessing what was going on. And when you solved it, you had only solved a very small amount of it, and perhaps incorrectly!
I love the way it kept the reader thinking and puzzling, and it was great how people were actually real, not their stereotypes or original impressions. I totally enjoyed this book!

Full of surprises!

This is my first book by this Author, but it won't be my last! Interesting concept made for a great read. I really enjoyed the narrator in this book as well.
My only complaint is that the audiobook kept stopping randomly and I'd have to restart it. If I set the sleep timer to stop, it wouldn't stop and would continue to play through out the night.

Writing isn’t great

The story has potential but there are a lot of unnecessary scenes and melodramatic dialog. Without that the book could’ve been half as long. I don’t mind long books but I don’t like listening to filler thanks. Scott Brick - who is overly dramatic most of the time - didn’t need the extra melodrama here. And so sorry, but his Australian accent was awful - a mixture cockney and Australian. Just no.

A great summer read

Loved it. A total page turner.
The narrator was good, if a little over the top at times.
Although I totally enjoyed this story I can see how Harlan Cohen has matured as a writer. 😊

Long and predictable.

So …. I understand this is one of Coben’s first novels, and he suggests the reader skip it if it’s the first of his novels read. It was an okay book. It could use a good editor to chop about 1/3 of the vacuous dialogue and please, eliminate the cliches. However, I listened to the end and looked forward to the story winding out which was no small effort as Brick reads like a 40’s film star with lots of needless drama. This novel could have been very good. Instead it shows the reader how far Coben has come in style and story development.

Wonderful book

I loved every moment of this book. It’s been a long time since I’ve been so captivated by a story. And to think, this was Coben’s first novel. Seems like I’ll be occupied with his work for awhile.
