Publisher's Summary

Yorkshire 1969. At a rock concert a murdered woman is found in a sleeping bag. The detective assigned to the case, Stanley Chadwick, is hard-headed and strait-laced. He could not have less in common with long-haired hippies. But he has a murder to solve, and it looks as if the victim was somehow associated with the up-and-coming band the Mad Hatters. In the present, Inspector Alan Banks is investigating the murder of a journalist who was working on a feature about the Mad Hatters. This is not the first time the aging rock superstars have been brushed by tragedy. Banks finds he has to delve into the past to find out exactly what hornets' nest the journalists stirred up.

    "A Really Good Listen!"

Thoroughly enjoyable crime thriller, made all the more enjoyable if you grew up in the 60's, like me, and can identify with some of the musical references of the time. The switching between the present day and 1969 investigations works well, and inspite of DI Banks and his colleagues being established serial fictional characters, the author doesn't stint on developing the 60's characters in the story. This was my first DI Bank's novel and it made me thirsty for more, although unfortunately the are are no other unabridged audios. Shame!

    "well worth a listen"

really enjoyed this book. well read. liked the reader's voice. some voices can really annoy. i could relate to the time of the first murder & i enjoyed the authors description of whitby. a place i love. i didnt hear any 'glaring' gaffs as one reader did. but i guess it's possible. i'll definately look out for more books by this author

"Good reading but can see the date problem"

I am thoroughly enjoying this. It is well read and a gripping story.
I can, however see Russell's problem. The 1969 bits are dated but the modern ones aren't. There is always a clue but unless you are familiar with the characters you might not spot them and there is no discernable gap between the different plot strands.
Have to admit I didn't spot any obvious errors

    "Very good."

An excellent story and read extreamly well. The story switches between the present day and events in the late 60's.

"Is this really 1969? or 1999?"

I am not sure about the author?s research with this book; I am only into the first hour but as a teenager of the 1960?s I find many mistakes.
I well remember selling early mobile phones in the 1980?s and the first PC in general use was not until 1981 (msdos) and as to DNA this was not used by the police until the late 1990.s yet so far all have been mentioned in 1969, either the detective was ahead of his time or there seems to be a time problem.
Is the story in 1969 or have I missed something?

    "Gave up!"

I have wondered whether to try this series for some time. Something stopped me each time. Now I know why. I honestly tried hard to listen to this book, I am half way through the second half but find that I just don't care enough about the story to struggle on.
