Phantom Prey Review

I have read nearly all of the Prey series and restarted the series in audiobooks. The plot line involving Elyse-Fairy-Lauren was not believable. Richard Ferrone is a talented narrator and I will select the version where he narrates; however, his voice for Fairy was horrible; could hardly wait for the story to end

THE MASTER

The Prey Series is what got me reading books to begin with. I am married to a police sergeant/internal affairs investigator. John Sandford is the only author that truly gets the dialogue accurate. It's amazing. I get so upset when I finish one of his books. I can't wait for the next one to begin. The entire prey series is amazing. Lucas Davenport is delicious. Keep them coming!

Halloween read

I always try to find a holiday-appropriate read, just for the heck of it, but have trouble with Halloween as the holiday annoys me. I mean, really, what nonsense. So I end up disappointed every year, since I just don't get off on ghosts. Face it, there are no evil spirits. But there are evil people, so these more realistic stories are much spookier to me. That said, I am annoyed with some of the reviewers who put me off this book, complaining about Ferrone's voice. Glad I had Halloween this year to give me an excuse to add this book to my Davenport collection. I think Ferrone did quite a creditable job at his valley girl accent, and have to wonder what those reviewers were expecting. Nobody likes valley girl speech, but please, that's hardly Ferrone's fault.

Annoying female voice

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not really money well spent. The story is good, but the narrator reads the female villain in a horrible whiny nasal valley girl tone that was annoying at first but by the midway mark made me grit my teeth. I began to put on fast speed during her scenes. Totally ruined all suspense and interest in her as a character.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Phantom Prey?

The female villain and her revelation should have been (and was in the paperback) but moment/impact ruined by terrible narration of her voice.

What didn’t you like about Richard Ferrone’s performance?

The female villains voice!! All other woman and all other books by this narrator are fine, just seems to be this book and this character. Why why why he read her like he did is beyond me.

Could you see Phantom Prey being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

I think the whole Prey and Virgil Flowers series would make a good tv show.

Any additional comments?

All the Prey books are great and I live them all. The narrator does a really great job on all other books and all other characters. The reading of this book was just a little off for some reason.

Not his best

I found the story hokey in parts but if it wasn't for that it would have been good as usual.

It was good... but not the best

The story was okay, kept me entertained and I certainly recommend it for Prey fans, but it's not one of the more intriguing stories and I have to agree with some others--the voice of the Fairy was really bad. Richard Ferrone is a great narrator and I guess he has to make the best of what Sanford writes, but Fairy's voice was cringeworthy.

Dud

I’ve only disliked two books in the series so far & this is one of them. The story got so silly I almost abandoned it. Just dumb.

Narration Frustration

I've seen several reviews that mention poor narration, saying that Ferrone's female voices aren't good. I didn't find that to be the case. They were perfectly acceptable voices. I just found the speech patterns of the Fairy character to be irritating, and it threw me out of the story every time. I wish he'd chosen a different way to get her spacey weirdness across to the audience. This is the first time I've had any problems with his narration, and as it was character-specific, I'm sure I'll enjoy the rest of his work.
