"Perfect Match was worth the credit"

I think by listening to the Storyteller first is what made me give this book 4 out of 5 stars. It was quite as good as Storyteller but it was a good listen. Jodi Picoult is consistent in her writing and I feel it was worth the credit used to obtain this book.

    "Not her best"

I do not think this is Picoult's best book. I ALMOST stopped listening to it after the first couple of hours. What didn't I like? It spent way too much time at the beginning talking about what the mother was thinking about the terrible situation. But most of all, the main character, the mother, just wasn't very likeable to me. I really didn't like her, I didn't like how she reacted to things, she seemed selfish and at times her decisions didn't even make sense. Quite a few times I would think, "I can't believe you are acting like that." I also thought some of the situations were a bit too extreme and unbelievable. I did listen to the end just to find out what happened.

    "Just ok"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I can't say I hated it, it was entertaining and there were times I didn't want to stop listening, but it was far from My sister's keeper. I've enjoyed Picoult's books, although MSK and House rules were my favorites. It wasn't realistic court room drama, at times making me think "really?? I doubt day times soaps would be that misleading". That being said, if you like love triangles, parental struggles and trying to walk a mile in another woman's shoes, you won't be wasting a credit.

If you’ve listened to books by Jodi Picoult before, how does this one compare?

It really doesn't and I've read/listened to several.

Do you think Perfect Match needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

    uhh, nope.

    Any additional comments?

Go for My sister's keeper, House rules or even nineteen minutes before this one.

    "Perfect match?"
Would you listen to Perfect Match again? Why?

yes and no Yes because it was a great read but no because I already know what to expect
which will take away from me listening to it

Who was your favorite character and why?

The mom, in her own little way SHE WAS CRAZY but a good crazy don't think I would have that much in me to do what she did but I get it I def get it

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

the different personalities. When the kid was telling his account when the husband was thinking those little things were brought out more and made you love the book that much more

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

the first 3-4 chapters VERY SAD my heart went out to the parents you can't get those moments back. you can't erase it def very sad

    "Absolute Waste of Money"
What would have made Perfect Match better?

    Nothing.

What could Jodi Picoult have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Never have written it in the first place.

What didn’t you like about the narrators’s performance?

    Everything.

What character would you cut from Perfect Match?

    All of them.

    Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoyed Picoult's My Sister's Keeper, so I was extremely disappointed in this absolute disgrace of a novel. The plot is predictable and therefore boring, it was impossible to relate to the characters, and the main character's actions are so unbelievably stupid as to make her absurd. Even after all this, I might have upped my rating of Perfect Match by a star if they had at least chosen a decent narrator to read it. As it stands, the voice of the main character is so simpering as to be insufferable. Bottom line, don't waste your money.

    "Not worth your time"
What would have made Perfect Match better?

I believe the main character, Nina should have been more portrayed as deranged psychopath with ocd...it would then be more understandable as to why she acted the way she did. I personally had a hard time following her reasoning and motivations.

Has Perfect Match turned you off from other books in this genre?

No. I usually like Picoult's books but would not have spent a credit if I knew more of the story line.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Perfect Match?

Anything involving Nina and her OCD tendencies.

    Any additional comments?

    Yuck.

I am an avid "reader"- I prefer to listen to books rather than read them due to the added dimension added by the narrator.

    "Too much."
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I never find reading or listening to a book to be time ill spent. But this was not my favourite book of Jodi Picoult's.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Wow.. there are so many things. Firstly, I would have made Nina a more believable character who was not so hard to like. I found her hard to relate to, both as a woman and as a mother. Nina's act of murder was inappropriate and out of keeping with her character. Even the most devoted mother would be unlikely to commit murder unless the perpetrator of the crime had been proved to be at fault… and even then…
I found that she had no ability to relate in an adult fashion to her husband Caleb. Then again, Caleb was a cold fish as well. I wouldn't given their marriage much of a chance for long-term success. I found the voice of Nathaniel as a child annoying as it was a little girl. It would have been simple enough to find a male child narrator… just a small point but it was another annoying point. I felt that the book went on way too long with too many contrived twists and turns. Just not an enjoyable book though I stuck with it til the very end.

What three words best describe the narrators’s voice?

    Annoying.

Did Perfect Match inspire you to do anything?

Yes… it inspired me to find a better book to listen to… and I'm sure some of them will be written by Jodi Picoult.
