Sister Pelagia: bespectacled, freckled, red-haired, woefully clumsy and constantly knitting, teaches gymnastics and literature, and in her spare time, solves crimes. This hugely entertaining mystery introduces us to a heroine who is a cross between Miss Marple and one of Charlie's Angels. A prized white bulldog has been poisoned, and the Bishop of Zavolzhsk sends Pelagia to investigate the dog's death as a favour for his aunt. The investigation soon descends into something far more dastardly, involving stolen gold, betrayed women, untrustworthy lovers, and two headless bodies that are pulled out of the river on the edge of the estate.

What the Critics Say

"The plot is lively and full of twists, the characters are strong, the denouement is exciting. And the not very nunnish nun is immensely appealing." (The Times)

What made the experience of listening to Pelagia and the White Bulldog the most enjoyable?

Once the story got going, I NEEDED to know who did it and what was going on! I was cheering Pelagia on.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The fact that each character is constantly referred to by their full name (including the dogs) is incredibly confusing. There are so many characters that I gave up trying to remember who most of them were and got a little confused as the story continued. It is a very good story and I will buy the next one soon.

Which character – as performed by Jilly Bond – was your favourite?

Pelagia and the Bishop were both good but Pelagia was definitely my favourite. She is intelligent and loveable.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The moment Pelagia is seen by the murderer and chased had me on the edge of my seat.
