Publisher's summary

In Stephanie Plum's opinion, toxic waste, rabid drivers, armed schizophrenics, and August heat, humidity, and hydrocarbons are all part of the great adventure of living in New Jersey. Out of work and out of money, with her Miata repossessed and her refrigerator empty, Stephanie blackmails her bail bondsman cousin into giving her a try as an apprehension agent. Stephanie knows zilch about the job requirements, but figures she can learn what it takes to catch a crook. Her first assignment: nail a former vice cop on the run from a charge of murder one - who also happens to be the irresistible macho pig who took Stephanie's virginity at age 16. This is the first in Evanovich's incredibly popular Stephanie Plum series.

Wrong narrator!!!

I love this book. Janet Ivanovich is one of my favorite authors however this narrator is awful! Normally I would give one of her books 5 stars however Lori Petty brings it down

Love the series!

This is the first time I have read this author and have fallen in love with the Stephanie Plum series. I downloaded all 13 books and listened to them all within a week. I couldn’t wait to hear what adventures (and mishaps!) that Stephanie, Joe, Ranger, Lula and the rest of the gang would get into. I’ve read some of the previous reviews. I agree with some and disagree with others. I disagree that it gets old and complacent that Stephanie finds herself in the same situations in every book. It appears to me that Stephanie’s character is just one of those people that trouble and mayhem seem to find. I do agree that narrator Lori Petty is the voice of Stephanie. Narrator Debi Mazar’s accent is a bit heavy for audio books and then after all this Lorilei King takes over as narrator for the rest of the series. While Ms. King’s character voices are awesome (she has such a range!) her Stephanie voice has no Jersey accent at all and sound just a little too “blue blood”. Otherwise Ms. King is a joy to listen to. You will fall in love with Ranger and Joe! Both are too hot to handle……no wonder Stephanie can’t choose between the two!

Don’t let the narrator changes deter you from listening to this funny charming, and at times mysterious series. You won’t be disappointed if you’re looking for something light hearted to listen to.

The book was good, reader...not so much

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend a different reader of this book (not Lori Petty). I like Lori Petty as an actress, and her spunky, irreverent style.
However, as the reader of this book, I almost put it down...but I slogged through it.
I am glad I read "Two for the money" book 2 with a different reader, and realized how funny and cool the book was!! This book may just need a different reader...Love ya Lori, but the reading of this book, just didn't do any service to the story.

What did you like best about this story?

I do suggest the series of books by Janet Evanovich.

Would you be willing to try another one of Lori Petty’s performances?

NO -Her acting is one thing...but her reading books...not so much.

Any additional comments?

About the series:
I laughed, and was "DANG" and found myself really loving the quirky and funny style of her heroine. This series is one of the few books I've found myself laughing out loud (no matter where I was) and enjoying the book so much I just wanted to keep reading and avoid work and friends.

For such a famous author I was disappointed

Too much of the story was the author telling the reader what was going on. There were many times were she could have showed readers instead.

more entertaining than I expected. I don't usually read this type of book. I would read another of her series.

Narrator

I started reading Janet Evanovich books years ago. I loved all of them. I have recently started using Audible so I decided I would start listening to her books on Audible. I was so disappointed with the Narrator. She did not do justice to the book and she sounded like a small child. I hope the next one is better

Read the book; skip the audiobook

Get into this fun inventive series with the books until you get to the ones Lorelei king narrates. There are few narrators worse than this one. Absolutely impossible to listen to. Then I read the physical book and it was actually quite good!

What an apt title!

Would you listen to One for the Money again? Why?

I have many times. It's just so entertaining and it is a clean enough story that you can listen with your pre-teen daughter. She loved it, too.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Stephanie, of course. Who else!?

Have you listened to any of Lori Petty’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Not that I know of. I don't pay a lot of attention to the names of the performers. I enjoy it more when they make the character come to life. Lori did just that.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When she walks into the bail bond shop and decides to become a bounty hunter. You can just picture it so clearly!
