Publisher's summary

A post-apocalyptic thriller of the after effects in the United States after a terrifying terrorist attack using electromagnetic pulse weapons.

In a small North Carolina town, one man struggles to save his family after America loses a war that will send it back to the Dark Ages.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based on a real weapon—the electromagnetic pulse (EMP)—which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States, literally within one second.

In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe, and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future and our end.

Critic reviews

"[An] entertaining apocalyptic thriller....fans of such classics as Alas, Babylon and On the Beach will have a good time as Forstchen tackles the obvious and some not-so-obvious questions the apocalypse tends to raise." ( Publishers Weekly)

Whether we’re focused on the apocalypse or just an ill-timed breakdown on the side of a particularly remote road, there’s something about imagining survival scenarios that can be addictive. On some level, we all wonder if we would have what it takes to pit ourselves against the worst the world can possibly offer and make it out alive. That’s why it’s no surprise that survival literature is so popular, and that the stories in the genre are so diverse.

Excellent Book

Very realistic events that will occur when an EMP happens. For a fictional book it brings back the very real events that occurred in the 1880's and in 1918 as well as the "Great Depression".

Thought provoking

Chilling and thought provoking. How close we are to being unable as a society and a nation to absorb a technological catastrophe. Well written and a nice job with the reading.

Couldn't put it down.

It'll change the way you think about the potential of the American Dream in a world with very real and dangerous threats! Couldn't put it down!

Alarmingly insightful

I listen to this and I wonder to myself, they know it's possible. They know we know it's possible. Therefore, our enemies know its possible, yet no one is preparing us or even acknowledging the possibility and we give millions of dollars to Iran. Its enough to make one think our leaders, particularly POTUS, wants such a horrible fatw to befall this nation. Very insightful and as a public servant in the emergency management field, very possible and very alarming. Most people have no idea what an EMS is.

Made me think

I would say this is a good book to get you thinking about what could happen if we didn't have all of our luxuries. I think the story flowed pretty well and left me with a sense of fear of not being able to make it in a world without power. There is so much thought put into how people would die off that I really started to wonder if I would survive or not.

It's a great read, I'd recommend.

first off I'm a fan of the going home series

First off I'm a fan of going home series from A American. The going home series is better in the aspect of single family survival and story. One second after is a much better community story.

They both have very useful aspects and tips in them. A lot of things in this book I never thought about and the organization is a necessity.

it's a tearjerker but it's worth the read. the history examples in it are phenomenal which ties everything together.
