Publisher's summary

A post-apocalyptic thriller of the after effects in the United States after a terrifying terrorist attack using electromagnetic pulse weapons.

In a small North Carolina town, one man struggles to save his family after America loses a war that will send it back to the Dark Ages.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based on a real weapon—the electromagnetic pulse (EMP)—which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States, literally within one second.

In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe, and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future and our end.

Critic reviews

"[An] entertaining apocalyptic thriller....fans of such classics as Alas, Babylon and On the Beach will have a good time as Forstchen tackles the obvious and some not-so-obvious questions the apocalypse tends to raise." ( Publishers Weekly)

Whether we’re focused on the apocalypse or just an ill-timed breakdown on the side of a particularly remote road, there’s something about imagining survival scenarios that can be addictive. On some level, we all wonder if we would have what it takes to pit ourselves against the worst the world can possibly offer and make it out alive. That’s why it’s no surprise that survival literature is so popular, and that the stories in the genre are so diverse.

JB

I really enjoy this book and have read it multiple times. The performance of it is done well but on that part I gave three stars for one reason. I live a short 45 minute drive from the place this story is set, I’m from here, the dialect that is used for the characters from these mountains is painfully wrong to me. Someone not familiar with it probably wouldn’t mind but to me it takes away from the story to have a badly done southern plantation sound to characters from a place that we talk entirely different.

This should be a must read for all of Congress and the President as well as much of the population.

Good and realistic story IMO

Good realistic story. Wasn't a fan of the voice acting. definitely worth a listen/read. I would read/listen the to a sequel.

Really makes you think.

Not as dark as i think things really would be if this happened to the U.S. but still a great book that really makes you think about what you would do if you ended up in this situation.

"Enjoyed"

I would like to say that I really "enjoyed" this book but I don't feel that "enjoyed" is an appropriate word. I found this book to be very eye opening of the real possible threat that stands against us as country as a whole and individuals ourselves. It's very thought provoking and I have been telling all of my friends, that will listen, about it since I started reading it. Do yourself a favor and take the time to read/listen to this book. Can't wait to start the next one.

A Unnerving Possibility. . .

This book in my opinion presents an unnerving possibility of what could happen if our leaders and citizens don't take heed.

Interesting

Really interesting and good book. I just wish it had more day to day home life struggles and learning and ingenuity - not as much about the masses. Good book overall though.

Too real

Amazing book, story could become reality and that's scary. Makes you think about being prepared...

This book will make you think.

Where does One Second After rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the better

What was one of the most memorable moments of One Second After?

The description of what happens to the elderly in the nursing home.

Any additional comments?

Definately worth listening/reading. A little preachy and right-wing politically, but overall a good book.
