Publisher's summary

A post-apocalyptic thriller of the after effects in the United States after a terrifying terrorist attack using electromagnetic pulse weapons.

In a small North Carolina town, one man struggles to save his family after America loses a war that will send it back to the Dark Ages.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based on a real weapon—the electromagnetic pulse (EMP)—which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States, literally within one second.

In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe, and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future and our end.

Critic reviews

"[An] entertaining apocalyptic thriller....fans of such classics as Alas, Babylon and On the Beach will have a good time as Forstchen tackles the obvious and some not-so-obvious questions the apocalypse tends to raise." ( Publishers Weekly)

Whether we’re focused on the apocalypse or just an ill-timed breakdown on the side of a particularly remote road, there’s something about imagining survival scenarios that can be addictive. On some level, we all wonder if we would have what it takes to pit ourselves against the worst the world can possibly offer and make it out alive. That’s why it’s no surprise that survival literature is so popular, and that the stories in the genre are so diverse.

Recommended by the husband of one of my favorite podcast host, maximized minimalist. It was an excellent story could not get enough. I'm planning on now starting the sequel one year later.

thrilling

this book forces us to think about what would happen if our country was hit with an EMP weapon. TV series such as falling skies, and Colony although were alien attacks, also showed how humans dealt with an abrupt change in lifestyle. The author goes the extra step to put us in the middle of the death and carniage that accompanies a scenerio of this sort. i had a hard time going to bed because i wanted to keep listening. excellent story and character development. bravo!

A Hard Look at what Could Go Wrong

This story is both a warning and a bummer. It is not happy, and looks with pretty good accuracy at what would happen to the world with an EMP event. It's good but with all these stories there are practical things that seem to go over looked. At the end of the book it will make you want to go and start prepping for this type of emergency.

Amazing read.

I can't think of a better way to express the horror and reality of what would be required of surviving something so probable

Very technical, gritty outline of EMP catastrophe

Overall, this book is excellent. The scenarios are very plausible and extremely realistic. One truly feels how medieval so Cory would become after an EMP attack, or similar attack if this nature. The narrator does a fine job, but he’s rather technical and that tends to make the story lag. But as far as realism and accuracy, this book is tops.
