Publisher's summary

A post-apocalyptic thriller of the after effects in the United States after a terrifying terrorist attack using electromagnetic pulse weapons.

In a small North Carolina town, one man struggles to save his family after America loses a war that will send it back to the Dark Ages.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based on a real weapon—the electromagnetic pulse (EMP)—which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States, literally within one second.

In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe, and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future and our end.

Critic reviews

"[An] entertaining apocalyptic thriller....fans of such classics as Alas, Babylon and On the Beach will have a good time as Forstchen tackles the obvious and some not-so-obvious questions the apocalypse tends to raise." ( Publishers Weekly)

Whether we’re focused on the apocalypse or just an ill-timed breakdown on the side of a particularly remote road, there’s something about imagining survival scenarios that can be addictive. On some level, we all wonder if we would have what it takes to pit ourselves against the worst the world can possibly offer and make it out alive. That’s why it’s no surprise that survival literature is so popular, and that the stories in the genre are so diverse.

Wake UP!

Some other reviewers cannot seem to get past their own politics.
I found this book well written and credible. I can only hope nothing like this ever happens. But I can see that our modern, technical society is fragile. Could you imagine what would happen to our country if we suddenly lost our power for an extended time? God help us!
The story is riveting and engaging. A must read! Open your eyes and see!

Awesome Read

Wow, what an awesome read. This books really makes each of us think what we would do if faced with the same catastrophe. Would we stand strong or fall like so many in this book did. This book makes us look inward at the person we are and want to be. Loved it!

Everyone should read this and know it could happen

Bad things happen to good people all the time. The tecknowledge for this to happen is out there
for anyone to look up on the internet. Rouge countries or groups capable of launching a rocket into space could pull something like this. Its eye opening............

Excellent book regarding a pretty scarry threat!

I could not stop listening. This is a threat that I was somewhat familiar with, but had never really thought hard about. The subject matter is presented as part of a riveting story, plot and characters.

I recommend this book to anyone that likes good fiction, and especially if you want to know more about what an EMP attack could do to our society.

One Second After...frightening to think about

This was a great listen. The story line was very realistic and left you with a lot to think about. The narrator was decent and read with emotion. Over all I liked this book very much.

Must Read

Very thought-provoking book. The scenario is all too real, it would be very easy for a rouge country to light off some nukes that resulted in an electromagnetic pulse. If our electrical grid was knocked out for 30 days country would be in chaos.

I enjoyed the narrator. This book is a very serious book with serious implications that should be read and paid attention to. It's not just fiction, it's a very real possibility.

Very well done to the author of this book for shining light on this very serious potential situation.

Something to think about.

All around a good story. You'll definitely be thinking about it later, especially given 70% you may have already thought about. It's the 30% you didn't consider.

The singular down grade is the narrator's female voice. He sounded just like Tina Belcher.
