Publisher's summary

A post-apocalyptic thriller of the after effects in the United States after a terrifying terrorist attack using electromagnetic pulse weapons.

In a small North Carolina town, one man struggles to save his family after America loses a war that will send it back to the Dark Ages.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based on a real weapon—the electromagnetic pulse (EMP)—which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States, literally within one second.

In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe, and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future and our end.

Critic reviews

"[An] entertaining apocalyptic thriller....fans of such classics as Alas, Babylon and On the Beach will have a good time as Forstchen tackles the obvious and some not-so-obvious questions the apocalypse tends to raise." ( Publishers Weekly)

Whether we’re focused on the apocalypse or just an ill-timed breakdown on the side of a particularly remote road, there’s something about imagining survival scenarios that can be addictive. On some level, we all wonder if we would have what it takes to pit ourselves against the worst the world can possibly offer and make it out alive. That’s why it’s no surprise that survival literature is so popular, and that the stories in the genre are so diverse.

Definite cold chills, scared for my country.

Bit of a slow read, for sure, but what the author is trying to reach definitely has me worried for humanity. Side-note: The sound leveling is not adequate so occasionally felt like I was about to blast a speaker.

Incredibly Realistic!

As a young, relatively new prepper with a wife and 2 kids under 4 years old, this book took me on an amazing, stark, powerful and educational journey. I’ve gained a glimpse of what to expect and prepare for. Thank you!

An Eye Opener

I always knew an EMP would be bad for our society. I had no idea to what lengths. I’ve also always known that our “1st World” that we live in constantly teeters on the brink of total collapse. This story perfectly outlines what would likely happen if such an attack were to take place. Plus, addresses all of the likely side effects that one doesn’t think of.

While a tough listen because of the content, the narrator does and good job and was easy to listen to. I found the pacing just right. This was a good book.

a need to read book@

In a soft society, people need to be faced exposed to what could be. most in the USA have no concept or thought about life in a disaster.

Reality

I became so tied up in the book it almost seemed it was happening. There were times I had to stop and bring myself back to reality. The fact that it could actually happen added to that feeling.

The realism of characters against the cruel backdrop of an EMP attack.

I would not say I "enjoyed" this book but it was eye opening concerning a nightmarish scenario that might actually happen. Everything depicted seems natural but flawed. I imagine if America suffered an EMP attack, all that could breakdown would.

Wow, just wow. I could not stop listening to this book. Amazing listen and also very interesting with how possible it is for us in the USA.
