Publisher's summary

A post-apocalyptic thriller of the after effects in the United States after a terrifying terrorist attack using electromagnetic pulse weapons.

In a small North Carolina town, one man struggles to save his family after America loses a war that will send it back to the Dark Ages.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based on a real weapon—the electromagnetic pulse (EMP)—which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States, literally within one second.

In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe, and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future and our end.

Critic reviews

"[An] entertaining apocalyptic thriller....fans of such classics as Alas, Babylon and On the Beach will have a good time as Forstchen tackles the obvious and some not-so-obvious questions the apocalypse tends to raise." ( Publishers Weekly)

Whether we’re focused on the apocalypse or just an ill-timed breakdown on the side of a particularly remote road, there’s something about imagining survival scenarios that can be addictive. On some level, we all wonder if we would have what it takes to pit ourselves against the worst the world can possibly offer and make it out alive. That’s why it’s no surprise that survival literature is so popular, and that the stories in the genre are so diverse.

Informative and prophetic

I read the book many years ago and it has remained a constant topic of discussion. Awareness needs to be stressed to our govt.

Scary to think it could happen

Scary to think it could happen, but it could. Well written, the medical and military parts do sound spot on. I think everyone should have this book on there list.

Relevant today, thought-provoking and scary

I was thinking the whole time, what if this happened today, and it scared the hell out of me. Good story that takes you on a ride you won’t forget. The only criticism I had was the narrator was not able to convey when a woman was speaking all the time. This made it confusing at times when the character was a woman and the narrator used a man’s voice. Over all a great rendition. I strongly recommend this book.

Wow!

It’s possible. If our government doesn’t pull itself together soon, I have no doubt we will find ourselves in this position….
Hope y’all know where your going, I do!

Really enjoyed reading this book

This book brought tears to my eyes more then once. Situations were realistic and brought reality to my mind if there were to be an EMP attack. The decisions that would need to be made, the need for tight network of people, how even the best people will do what they have to for their family, the triage that takes place throughout the book for who is most likely to survive was heart wrenching. Very thought provoking book. Thank you

Enjoyable wake up call

We actually had this as one of our stress test scenarios at my old job.

Scary prospect to think of a non state actor pulling it off.

Amazing read

Such a good book. Loved listening to the whole thing beginning to ending. It makes you think of what would you do in this situation, and the reality is scary.

the ugly truth

I should hope this book becomes required reading in high schools. It should be encouraged in all military branches to be read.
