Publisher's summary

A post-apocalyptic thriller of the after effects in the United States after a terrifying terrorist attack using electromagnetic pulse weapons.

In a small North Carolina town, one man struggles to save his family after America loses a war that will send it back to the Dark Ages.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based on a real weapon—the electromagnetic pulse (EMP)—which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States, literally within one second.

In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe, and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future and our end.

Critic reviews

"[An] entertaining apocalyptic thriller....fans of such classics as Alas, Babylon and On the Beach will have a good time as Forstchen tackles the obvious and some not-so-obvious questions the apocalypse tends to raise." ( Publishers Weekly)

Whether we’re focused on the apocalypse or just an ill-timed breakdown on the side of a particularly remote road, there’s something about imagining survival scenarios that can be addictive. On some level, we all wonder if we would have what it takes to pit ourselves against the worst the world can possibly offer and make it out alive. That’s why it’s no surprise that survival literature is so popular, and that the stories in the genre are so diverse.

Amazing book- some really rough language.

Very well written and informative. I will be listening to it again, soon. The foul language is only used by evil characters, as would happen in actuality. The main characters are good in thought and deed.

We are already prepared for hard times in our family. We have a year's supply of food, hygiene stuff, laundry detergent, etc., that we use and rotate on a regular basis. We are not zombie apocalypse preppers, just prepared for any kind of hard times that could hit our family.

Excellent take on a societal breakdown.

It was a "page turner" on audiobook, at the annoyance of my wife. :D I enjoyed the characters, the location setting, and the action throughout. Some interesting insight on the extent of suffering that could happen in a large scale disaster. I wonder how many will recognize the conditions that the Americans face in this book, could be faced by many others around the world, and possibly by our hands in current situations. Made me think some more about the suffering in war. Loved the narration.

Too True

This book has so much realism that it could be considered a horror novel, or worse a prophetic reality. Certainly there is only one thing to do, prepare as best as is possible. No one knows but if you are a betting soul...

Enjoyed it Overall

By and large I liked this book. It's a lot to think about and a type of horror that could actually happen. The main character seems to have disdain for liberals until they become convenient for him. Or that's the author's POV coming through, I can't tell. I didn't let that get in the way of enjoying the book though.
