Publisher's summary

A post-apocalyptic thriller of the after effects in the United States after a terrifying terrorist attack using electromagnetic pulse weapons.

In a small North Carolina town, one man struggles to save his family after America loses a war that will send it back to the Dark Ages.

Already cited on the floor of Congress and discussed in the corridors of the Pentagon as a book all Americans should read, One Second After is the story of a war scenario that could become all too terrifyingly real. Based on a real weapon—the electromagnetic pulse (EMP)—which may already be in the hands of our enemies, it is a truly realistic look at the awesome power of a weapon that can destroy the entire United States, literally within one second.

In the tradition of On the Beach, Fail Safe, and Testament, this book, set in a typical American town, is a dire warning of what might be our future and our end.

Critic reviews

"[An] entertaining apocalyptic thriller....fans of such classics as Alas, Babylon and On the Beach will have a good time as Forstchen tackles the obvious and some not-so-obvious questions the apocalypse tends to raise." ( Publishers Weekly)

Whether we’re focused on the apocalypse or just an ill-timed breakdown on the side of a particularly remote road, there’s something about imagining survival scenarios that can be addictive. On some level, we all wonder if we would have what it takes to pit ourselves against the worst the world can possibly offer and make it out alive. That’s why it’s no surprise that survival literature is so popular, and that the stories in the genre are so diverse.

Eye opener

It was a great listen. I did enjoy the narrator. I'm from the Blk Mtn/Asheville area, so I could mentally see the landmarks. I think it made it more real to me. So, I have decided to buy a case of Spam everytime I go to Sam's club.

moving

this story while fiction is so close to things that can indeed happen here today that if it doesn't make you think of preparing for trouble, and wonder about what those in power in our government are thinking

Excellent view on a “what if...” scenario

I’ve often wondered about this very topic and when I came across this book, and the others in the series, I immediately had to share the word. This series gives one glimpse at the “what if” scenario.

Wow! Scary great story

It took me back to my youth when the network formally know as ABC aired, "The Day After."

The author drops you in a small town and takes you on a very realistic and sobering trip. I experienced a whole range of emotions; anger, happiness, sorrow and disbelief.

Amazing

I started with the ‘Survival Series Going Home’. This is another amazing book. The story line, emotion in Joe Barret was amazing and lessons it gives are all incredible. Listen and pay attention.

Wow.

More than thought-provoking, it's unnerving to know this could very well be our future. I was a little disappointed that the setting was a small town in NC because I wanted to know more of how the other areas were being affected, but you don't hear anything about that until the final chapter. I understood why it had to be that way but it was still the only thing I wish it had more of. It is all based on one family in NC.

Stock up on: Medicine, antibiotics, vitamins, canned goods, dried goods, bleach, guns and ammo, bows and arrows, anything you can think of that might get you through a very primitive survival situation. Expect that the worst is going to come out of people. Be prepared to defend yourself, and accept what that will actually mean for you. Think about where you'll draw that line.

Makes you think about whether you want to be living near family when this happens rather than 1500 miles away, as I am right now. It's very worth contemplating; not only to be around family but also what state you would fair best in if the bottom falls out.
