"No character depth, just speed-read Nazi warnings"

Trying hard to show that Nazis are alive and well in the very countries that they brutalized decades ago, the terrible narrator literally speed-reads this. I thought that my iPhone must have accidentally switched to double speed; but no, just awful narration.

The premise is valid, the scare warranted, but the book is not literature. From this sample, I would never consider this author or narrator again, and it was a waste of even the token amount spent on this book. It is not a "story", it is a warning.

    Story
"One Day In Budapest, a great listen"
If you could sum up One Day in Budapest in three words, what would they be?

    Very enjoyable listen.

What did you like best about this story?

Story moved along at a good pace with new interesting characters added to another great adventure for Morgan.

Which character – as performed by Veronica Giguere – was your favorite?

    Morgan of course

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes and I did.

    Any additional comments?

My only complaint is that, it was just a tease since it ended so quickly. Can't wait for the next full novel.

"Painful listen--and not a great story either"
What would have made One Day in Budapest better?

This book had an interesting premise, but it was such a shallow story and not fleshed out in any depth. It just jumped in, told a very short story--and ended. Shortest book I've ever listened to.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I won't ever read another book by this author, if this is an example of his/her work. I think I got this one on a "Daily Deal," so I must have been intrigued by the story description--I love a good thriller and a good neo-Nazi thriller would have been right up my alley. But, this one was definitely a disappointment, to say the least.

How could the performance have been better?

I thought this was one of the worst audiobook performances I have ever listened to. I'm not sure how to describe it, except to say her voice grated on me horribly (high and chirpy) and there was no nuance or inflection in the reading--just a breathy over-dramatic sameness to every sentence. It was awful! I will definitely keep track of her name and make sure I never buy another book read by her.

    Any additional comments?

I listen to 90% of my books these days, and I am very sensitive to how a book is read--would I have emphasized that word there, used that inflection if I were reading it to myself? Most of the time, it's just an occasional "I wouldn't have read that sentence that way" feeling--but from the first paragraph to the end, this reading seemed all wrong to me.

"JF Penn writes another compelling story."
What made the experience of listening to One Day in Budapest the most enjoyable?

I enjoyed this one a lot. It was a lot milder in the violence area than other books in the Arkane series and I enjoyed the break. That doesn’t mean it was a book about butterflies and picnics—this is a high action, fast paced adventure read. It deals with terrorism and the horrors that come with it. Main character, Dr Morgan Sierra finds herself once again in a dilemma of good versus evil. I enjoy reading about the outer trials (the battle against terrorism) and the inner trials (Morgan’s battle against her religious beliefs and the conflicted feeling between her heart and mind).

What was one of the most memorable moments of One Day in Budapest?

I loved the point of view of the young woman kidnapped by the terrorist band in the shop. It was very real and helped me to see into the lives of not just the Jews, but the Jewish women.

Have you listened to any of Veronica Giguere’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes. And I felt like she was more comfortable in this book. Perhaps because she is now familiar with Dr Morgan Sierra's character. It flowed a lot better than the other Arkane books.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I love the way JF Penn brings the story to a close. I love the moments where Morgan questions her beliefs OR finds connections to the places she visits. I believe like, Penn, we are tied to our family and the places they come from.

    Any additional comments?

Overall I believe this was an excellent addition to the series. I liked how you can read these books in practically any order.

"You'll want to down this story in one sitting!"
    Any additional comments?

“We are fiercely proud of our Hungary, but sometimes she bares her teeth.”

    And indeed she does.

From the “gunmetal grey” that Budapest is painted in as the prologue opens to the bizarre and profane rituals taking place beneath the city as the story unfolds, One Day in Budapest is darkly mesmerizing.

Dr. Morgan Sierra, self-possessed, brainy and feisty heroine of the Arkane thrillers, has arrived in Budapest on an uncomplicated errand that should see her on her way back to London in a few hours. As she arrives, she marvels that a short flight or train trip can transport you to another time and place – almost like having an adventure.

    Careful what you wish for!

In this two-and-a-half hour novella, Joanna Penn achieves many of the effects of a full-length novel. Her characters are fully fleshed – there’s enough backstory to give them depth and enough detail that you find you’ve come to care for them, and you gasp in disbelief when they’re killed off. She uses shifting point of view in an interesting way, too – especially in those scenes in which a character meets a grisly end.

The imagery is atmospheric and sometimes jarring – the grey architecture is mirrored both in the landscape and in the subject matter that harkens back to the horrors of Nazi Europe. And the recurring visual of blood-spattered glass reminds us that this story and its subject aren’t for the timid.

Finally, this story moves along quickly – the pacing is good and isn’t impeded by too much description. The narrator does a good job with this, too. She has an expressive voice, and she manages to distinguish between the various characters impressively.

This is a thoroughly satisfying listening experience – highly recommended!

    Story
    "An Exciting, Cautionary Tale"
Where does One Day in Budapest rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It is at the top of my list. Great story, wonderfully presented.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot was very intriguing as it mimics the tenuous nature of society when deep seeded hatred flows beneath the surface. This is the type of event, sadly, that could occur just about anywhere when mob rule and generational bias boil over into something ugly.

What does Veronica Giguere bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She did an excellent job, giving urgency and clarity to the story and enveloping the characters in their own, distinctive voice.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The book made me appropriately uncomfortable and tense when it shows how ignorance and a collective will can become murderous and evil.

    Any additional comments?

Penn's story is well crafted and involves such deep and subtle detail that can only come from someone who has been there, visited the locations, understands the culture and knows how to present a possible future if bigotry and ignorance were to reign. The characters are rich and well formed, making this audio book a very enjoyable listen.

    Story
"How easily our civilized world can crumble away."
Would you listen to One Day in Budapest again? Why?

Yes. Very exciting story. I read the Kindle version last year, and this audio version was just as exciting. Being read to allows your imagination to run in lots of directions.

What was one of the most memorable moments of One Day in Budapest?

There are actually two for me. The first is the issue of the shoes, where Anna and the store patrons blindly go to their death. I'm sure they really never believed that this situation could actually happen again. The second was the scene in the square just after Morgan inserts the thumb drive into the computer - when the mesmerized crowd wakes up and can't really believe what they were about to do and about to have done to them.

Have you listened to any of Veronica Giguere’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I haven't. She is an excellent reader and has wonderful inflections in her voice. At times, the reading was a little fast and I had to back up to make sure I heard it correctly. But this was a very, very minor issue. I look forward to listening to more of her readings.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Since I had previously read the e-book, I knew the story, but it still is mind-boggling on how people know better, and want better, but still totally lose their self and become a crowd.

    Any additional comments?

Looking forward to the next ARKANE adventure. I've read them all several times and will continue to do so in the future.

    "All Encompassing"
If you could sum up One Day in Budapest in three words, what would they be?

    Unexpected/historical/characters

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the historical references, the scenic/topographic descriptions and especially the strong character development.

What aspect of Veronica Giguere’s performance would you have changed?

Characters accents and voice control. Sometimes, when adjusting from male to female in conjunction with changing accents, the emphasis of the sentence as lost. Pronounciations=perfect. Lovely voice.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Chapter three was significant to me as the protesters became increasingly hostile, and the police had not yet arrived. I read this book alone so it was significant to learn the reasons why 1) there was a murder 2)why/who was there protests 3) be introduced to the characters. Although a series, this book can stand alone also (Congratulations!)

    Story
    "Gripping and well researched novella"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this novella to thriller and history buffs as well as anyone who likes their stories a bit dark because it is a well researched, creates a vivid and chilling picture of Budapest's past, present and a hypothetical future where the horrors of the past could easily be enacted again.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Morgan Sierra is a kick-ass heroine with the right combination of superior intellect and combat skills.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

The scene with the shootings of innocent people at the shoes on the Danube was evocative and poignant. The horrors suffered in WW2 could so easily be suffered again.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I had already read the novella on Kindle but I also enjoy listening to J.F.Penn's books too. There is a different feel to it on audio - it becomes even more chilling. The length of the novella is a great for listening to during commutes. Bring on the traffic jams...

    Any additional comments?

Zoltan makes a good hero. There is definitely sizzle between him and Morgan.
