Publisher's summary

It is 1918. Coming out of retirement, an aging Sherlock Holmes travels to Palestine with his 19-year-old partner, Mary Russell. There, disguised as ragged Bedouins, they embark on a dangerous mission. If they fail, the holy city goes up in flames.

With her unerring flair for the dramatic, Laurie R. King packs this novel with bloodcurdling adventure, clever disguises, and layers of intrigue. Jenny Sterlin's superb voicing of the prickly Holmes and the fiercely intelligent Russell captures every nuance of their unconventional relationship.

Historical Details Abound

There is much to recommend in the detail and description, and I found it fascinating, but it does tend to overwhelm the story. Jenny Sterlin does a wonderful job with the variety of characters.

Why Did I Wait So Long To Read This!

Want to know more about the Middle East and feel like you are there with the British negotiations and a better understanding of Lawrence of Arabia 's cause? This King book goes into my top ten list! There is something for everyone to enjoy in this novel, Highly entertaining, the ending somewhat predictable which doesn't matter with the new escapades Sherlock blindsides Russell into engaging. It is worthy of multiple listens!!

It's a Good Installment

I know there were some who said one could skip this installment as it was s bit of a prequel but I differ there. The story is good, the character development is entertaining and the narration is first rate. If you enjoy this series, you will enjoy this book. Go ahead and give it a lot stem.

Quite remarkable! Holmes is excellent in his new role.I highly recommend

I recommend highly. Quite remarkable. There is the History of the British in
The Middle East : Deserts Deception intrigue
.......and oh so British. In the middle of the desert...... the top British commander of all operations stopped everything for afternoon tea. Sandwiches with no crusts, pastries etc. .... and the commander apologized for
Canned milk instead of fresh...... he didn’t like goats milk. Then the war resumed! Sherlock Holmes is excellent in his new role. I wasn’t sure I could embrace it. But he and Mary Russell make an odd ..... but good team.

Wonderful

Another great well written story. This one deals with the history of religion especially the Christians, Muslims and Jews. The story itself had several dead ends (parts of the story which go nowhere). But the writing style and the use of words greatly overwhelms any negatives. The writting is excellent and this was supported strongly by the narrator. The descriptions of the Holy Land, the various inhabitants of that place plus the excellent scene building make this a most enjoyable book. I will listen to more.
