She can't prove he did it. But she might die trying....

From the Sunday Times number one best-selling author of the Logan McRae series comes a stand-alone spin-off featuring DS Roberta Steel

Revenge is a dangerous thing....

Detective Chief Inspector Roberta Steel got caught fitting up Jack Wallace - that's why they demoted her and quashed his sentence. Now he's back on the streets, and women are being attacked again. Wallace has to be responsible, but if Detective Sergeant Steel goes anywhere near him, his lawyers will get her thrown off the force for good.

The Powers That Be won't listen to her, not after what happened last time. According to them, she's got more than enough ongoing cases to keep her busy. Perhaps she could try solving a few instead of harassing an innocent man?

Steel knows Wallace is guilty. And the longer he gets away with it, the more women will suffer. The question is: how much is she willing to sacrifice to stop him?

Great ride with Roberta Steele

Roberta Steele is the most wonderful horrible police officer in fiction. The story was quick moving and engaging - and not predictable. Steve Worsley’s performance was brilliant as always.

Roberta gets her own book!

Really good story about Roberta Steele and her new team. There are some laugh out loud funny bits. Roberta can be maddening at times but she's a good cop. I miss Logan but this is her story.

And this includes one of the best lines ever about fake news.

Excellent narration! Waiting somewhat patiently for the next book.

Read after In The Cold Dark Ground

And before Blood Road. Enjoyable spinoff. Tufty is our surrogate Logan in this book. And his time with Steele is similar to Logan’s which gives that familiarity. But it’s also how we wish Logan would be with Steele. Fun and happy some of the time. Agree with the reviews that don’t love the ending. Definitely need a heavy dose of suspended belief. Overall it’s worth the credit and of course a must-listen for fans of the LM series.

THE GUY CAN WRITE!

I have been a 'Crime Reader' for decades. My wife is a Superior Court Judge in the criminal division after slaving for 26 years as a Public Defender. She came out of a top five law school but, as a "principled" human, she shunned corporate (read $) insouciance in order to see that folks were getting a 'fair deal' (as far as that is possible in this Zoo we call the American Culture (sic). My dinner conversations over the decades have painted a broad, clear vision of American Justice (sic) as distributed by the USA.
MacBride, through his, at times, brutal depictions and loamy language, spins it like no other. "Dirty Wash Cloths" like Baldacci and his ilk are essentially Cartoonists, not crime writers, and their formulaic tripe disgusts me.
This guy, Craig Johnson, was off to a reasonable start, but he, too, sank into the bowels of repetitive nonsense. Euro writers of note are vastly superior; Philip Kerr being a good example of a group too large to fit in here.
What is so terrifyingly obvious is that Americans are DEVOID of ANY CULTURAL IDENTITY as expressed through their popular writers.
Truck them somewhere, lured by the promise of some of their vapid awards, and shoot them all! Alas, they likely only have one 'honest' book in them (their ensembles penned by others), so eliminating them will only ratchet up their myriad pretenders to squeeze out more crap in their "honor" (sic).

We are in SERIOUS TROUBLE!

I loved the development of Steel

We are treated to non stop Rebecca Steel and her character development. I think this maybe MacBrides best story and best character. I look forward to the next RS centered novel. Great work!!!

Delightful read, wicked sense of humour.

Great production beginning to end. Wonderful narration and would be hard to go wrong with the material provided. The characters are wonderful. I have read or listened to all of MacBride’s books and it is interesting to see life from Steele’s perspective. I laughed out loud and uncontrollably more times during this book ..... not sure if it is a good thing or very, very scary to share MacBride’s sense of humour. Great book can’t wait for the next installment
