    "A very well crafted series"

As I finish the eighth in this series, I continue to appreciate the author's ability to weave together the lives of all the characters into a very well crafted and entertaining story. On to the next with hope that the author will continue to write more in the series.

However, I do wish that the "Sandy" story line would reach some conclusion soon.

    "One of James Best"

I've read all of Peter James Detective Superintendent Roy Grace's books, and this was one of his best!

The plot moves along nicely and is easy to follow. Grace and his usual cast of characters pull together the pieces of this mystery with their usual wit and dry Brittish humor in order to deal with the horrors of their job. Yet James writes in such a way that graphic violence is kept to a minimum. It's nice that this book finally lets the reader find out the full story of the history of Grace's first wife Sandy, which makes it easy to root for his current love, Cleo.Yet, having followed the history of Sandy's disappearance, it is only the reader who knows, and poor Grace is left still in the dark.

The ending is a nail biter, made even better by the rendering of the superb reader of this series. He moves easily from one character's voice to another, and puts the reader on the edge of their seat with drama or laughing at the character's personality quirks.

This series is best read in order, as James skillfully weaves references and characters throughout his series. That said, mystery lovers will love any of his books as a stand alone.

"Do editors still exist? Syntax errors, bad writing"
What disappointed you about Not Dead Yet?

I have been enjoying this series despite consistent syntax errors, but I had to stop listening when the dialogue in Not Dead Yet totally deteriorated. It made me sad because some of the writing was great and made me laugh out loud. These books could be excellent if they had been edited properly.

How could the performance have been better?

Sentences like: "He watched the man cross the street with a woman he wasn't familiar with." Why isn't the man crossing the street familiar with his companion? This is poor writing/needs editing.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Absolutely. The plots are generally interesting and unpredictable, and the characters have been fully formed and are believable. I like the main character and he is refreshingly UNsexist in general. I love hearing the inner dialogue of the warped psychopaths. I love the police work details, etc. The stories move along nicely.

    Any additional comments?

In a previous book in the this series, it says" She remembered sitting on her father's lap when he was a little boy." ??!!? What the Heck in the World?
